I started taking out my i/c today so I could clean it. I noticed a small canister that sits between the i/c and lower i/c pipe. My question is what is it for, and can I take it out?

no clue what its for...they got rid of it by 99. but i no of plent of people that yank'd it with no probs. ( it may have been intended at a silencer? )

I'm not sure what the production lifespan of this bizarre item was. It's either a muffler or some kind of buffer chamber. They stopped using them later. Removal is safe. It was only used on 2Gs. They seem to have been on some kind of silencing binge when they did the 2G.

Depends on who you ask, but I've heard that on a 2G that is the charcoal cannister (on my 1G this is underneath the battery box). If it is the charcoal cannister, don't remove it or you will not be emissions legal.

Nah, it depends on whether the person you describe it to is really paying attention. Like everyone else said, it's purpose is a somewhat of a mystery but most likely a sound dampener in the intake tract. Definitely not the charcoal box which is under the battery on his 96.

Um.... the intake going through the charcoal cannister? Do tell, do tell.

Since I have a 1G, I haven't actually seen this, but I've read it on one of these forums and just passed the information along. It's strange that there is this mystery box on the 95.

You are talking about something completely different then what he is asking about. The charcoal canister sits under the battery, he is talking about something attached to his lower intercooler piping.
