I know I need to look for a 4G63, but can I make adequate power out of a 420A with a stock bottom end? I want to keep it a daily driver but a weekend toy. Thoughts??

You can make good power out of a 420. The question is, how much do you wanna spend? Nitrous is one of the quick ways to get instant hp. Next you can turbo it. That's what I did with one of my old eclipses. You can find a Hahn kit on Craigslist pretty cheap.

My goal is 325-375 to the wheels. Nothing super crazy.

I doubt you will get close to that with a stock longblock, you will probably have to build the motor. At that point, might as well have a 4G63 imo. I've owned both (and have turboed 3 420a cars) and the 4G63 is definitely easier to make power with.

375 to the wheels would be over 425hp at the crank. Practically nothing will be stock at that point on a 420a. I highly doubt it would be reliable enough for a daily, and then there is the whole traction issue. Do yourself a favor and find a beater car. I finally got a dd and was able to garage the GSX and it was the best thing i have ever done for that car. It stays clean, keeps the wear and tear down, and I can work on it as I please without super late nights and scrambling to get the right parts in.

Stick with the 4g63 man don't waste the time honestly. Unless you totally love the car you have and want to do something different. The 4g63 was designed and over engineered to handle boost. People have ran almost fully stock motors at 500hp for 1000s and 1000s of miles without issues. A stock 420a with a turbo first of all wasn't designed to be boosted, and second you'll never make a "reliable" 350hp 420a on a stock bottom end. Investment in a fully built engine is a lot of $.

I owned a 420A powered 2G and even turbocharged it for a short period of time, it is not worth the hassle. It ran poorly due to the lack of tuning options, even if you have that figured out they become time bombs over 250whp. Not to mention how difficult it is to find aftermarket support for the damn things. I went 4G63 and never looked back. Even a stock 4G feels so much more potent, these cars are getting hard to find in good condition especially if they're turbo and AWD. But when you find one it's worth the wait/cost.
