Hello everybody!
This is my first post, I came here to obtain some good information about fixing my turbo problems. Let me tell you whats going on:
Car: 2G Eclipse GSX, 75k miles, no mods
So a couple years ago I had my car start smoking really bad, and I thought it was the headgasket. After some checking I narrowed it down to a busted turbo, I am thinking that the oil seals blew because I found lots of oil in the intercooler. I replaced the turbo with a used turbo I found online, supposedly had 13k miles on it. I also replaced the all the accessory belts, the timing belt, and the crank angle sensor at the same time as the turbo.
The new turbo came with a stainless steel oil feed line, and I found a fitting at Home Depot to adapt it to the oil filter housing. When installing I connected the line to the housing, and left the other end disconnected from the turbo and tried to revving the engine to get oil to squirt out. I wasn't able to get oil to squirt out, so I thought that the system might need to be closed to work and so I just finished installing the trubo.
I took the car out for a spin around the block today and everything seemed to work just great, except for it killing when I put the clutch in. I decided to head over to a friends house to try it out again, and after about 15 mi. I think the turbo blew again! I managed to make it to my buddies house, but I could hear some horrible clanky sound like a broken propeller the whole way. The car is horribly slow now, max speed 35 it seems like, and I had to hold the clutch in a bit just to make it up a couple hills on my way there.
So I'm pretty positive I need a new turbo, I shouldn't have been so impatient to not check the oil feed line. How can I check if this was the problem, and how can I ensure it doesn't happen again?
Thank you,
-Tony
