Can somebody please tell me what the right fluid for this transmission is?

Ok, i have a 1992 eagle talon 2.0 non turbo automatic (F4A22)
and i can not figure out what fluid to put in this thing. The guys at walmart say
ATF+4, the Haynes manual says mopar ATF +3 Type 7176a, The trans shop says Dextron III (that scares me) and no matter where i look i cant find the same answer twice. Can somebody Help Clear this up for me?

The Mitsubishi tech manual states:

MOPAR ATF PLUS (Automatic transmission fluid type 7176) or Dia ATF SP or equivalent. FWD Capacity is 6.4 qts.

IIRC you can use the ATF+4 because it meets all the specifications for ATF +3. But I would confirm it. Its been years since I owned an Auto (maybe time for a change!) but I seem to recall using the ATF +4 and possibly an additive specifically for imports. I'm sure someone else with more knowledge than I will chime in, but at least you know what the factory service manual says now.

ATF+4 is backward-compatible to any application requiring +3.

It's a newer version of the old friction-modified 7176 Chrysler fluid which is supposed to take heat better without breaking down. Still has the same anti-shudder protection that the +3 did, and the price is only about 60 cents more per quart than the old +3 fluid was.

When in doubt, always use what the manufacturer calls for in the vehicle. For some reason transmission shops like to use Dex III in everything, and that's not the right thing to do. They probably buy it by the drum.

Im not so sure about it being a chrysler trans i'd be more sure of it being a Mitsubishi trans, its been used in our cars, the mirage, and Ive even heard Hyundai cars.

And 92 gsr:4 stay with 5 speeds autos seem to be a curse from my experience haha.

I used to work at a transmission shop years ago and we did put dex in everything. We used a bottle of friction modifier in transmissions that needed it.

Your correct my bad. Was thinking 2g. :coy:

but still atf+4 will work just fine OP

Castrol atf+4 Full Synthetic formula exceeds ATF+3® requirements

Technologically advanced, full synthetic formulation provides superior transmission life.

Engineered with superior base oils to ensure superb low and high temperature performance.

Certified and approved for all Chrysler, Jeep, Dodge, Hyundai, and Mitsubishi cars and trucks that require ATF+4®, Mopar ATF+3®, ATF+2®, ATF+2 Type 7176®, or ATF+®.

Your good to go:thumb:

what about b & m trick shift? I was just in o'riley and they actually had that stuff. keep in mind this transmission is not in the best shape ever, so do you guys think castrol atf+4 would be best for reliability?

And also would that lubeguard stuff be a good idea as well?

And that's why I won't go to any shops. The reason dodge has such a bad rep with Trans is stuff like that. I had an 01 ram 2500, if anything other than atf4 went in it would destroy the seals and then boom

looks like im putting Castrol ATF+4 in there. Just waiting on a wire clip for the transmission. I cant wait to finally drive my talon agian.

My shop does it right. Only what's called for goes in trannies here. If we don't have the right stuff we order it. :thumb: No half-assen :hellyeah:

Its good to know that every transmission shop isn't half-assed

Oh its an automotive shop so its engine transmission brakes electrical whatever you need is:thumb: LOL I've never worked for a transmission shop but wouldn't work there long if that's the way they were. I wouldn't want my rep ruined by someone trying to be cheap ya know.

Ugh. Yeah they are hard to find, and I got totally screwed on a trans rebuild in my "free" Nissan hardbody. Paid $1300 for a rebuild only to receive a dead transmission that I had to remove and install. The guy was shady and impossible to stick because he was operating under someone else's name, and advice from the legal office on the base I'm stationed told me its up to me to sue but probably wouldn't get anything. So I paid $1800 at a reputable shop (that I confirmed was reputable) and was happy ever since. Then I deployed and sold the truck for $2600. Lol.

My father always told me the best lessons in life are the ones you pay for. Sorry for the off-topic rant!
