Ok for the last 3 days when i get off work i go home and try and get my timing marks correct of my 420a but the cam gears ALWAYS get out of whack some how and its really started to irritate me i have searched over this site over and over and google also for ways to keep my cam gear marks in line, btw i dont have anyone to help me by holding them in place and my wife sure as hell isnt gonna get dirty LOL but any help will appreciated thanks

Get some of these type of paper clips to hold the belt to the pulleys after you get it lined up.

ok i have some here at the office, would i need to offset them any so when the belt tightens down it would pull them in sync or just set them dead on and start from the crank and work my way up around the water pump and so on? thanks for the quick reply

I start at the cams, get them lined up, than go around the idler pulley, crank, and put the belt around the tensioner pulley last.

thanks man i guess im gonna give it another shot when i get home this afternoon, its just been one big pain in the ass i consider it the only thing bad about a dohc motor

I was just up in Gaston this past weekend! I like to have them offset just a hair so that when ALL of the slack comes out of the belt it all lines up. Are you using a mechanical or hydro tensioner?

http://www.vfaq.com/mods/timingbelt-2Gc-NT.html

when the cams are timed correctly, both will have the holes pointing straight up

pay special attention to the part where it says "Move crankshaft to 1/2 notch before TDC." (towards firewall)
if you dont do this, the marks will never line up.

also, if you need to get the cams off to replace the seals, just put a 1/4 drive extension in the cam holes to keep the cams from spinning

Usually what I do when I time a car is I will put the crank marks dead on. And then with the cams I will advance each of them one notch from where they are suppose to be. Then when you turn it by hand it will pull the slack out and they will usually be dead on first try.

thanks for all the replys, i am still using the hydro tensioner i didnt get a chance to mess with it yesterday b.c today is my daughters first birthday but i will mess with it and find out which way best works for me

well im such a dumb a** i took the valve cover off and everyone of my intake valves are bent except for maybe one LOL so i went out and got a used head the motor i took it off of was clean as hell even the valve cover gastet looked new on it and the seals that go around the spark plug holes look brand new so i think i got a good find, but my question is do i need to have this head surfaced or just slap it on there?

It's better to have them surfaced. But you can usually get away with cleaning them up real good. As long as it's not warped.

yeah im gonna go the safe way, but im gonna give the black clipse to my wife and get a gst when i get my taxes but any one know the average cost of geting them surfaced?

I do the exact same thing.

Prices can vary greatly depending on your location, so do as CODE4 suggested and start making phone calls. It really shouldn't cost more than $50-$75.

well i got my head in the machine shop getting resurfaced and new seals put in it was only 80 for that but for the head gasket kit from auto zone on my dads commercial account was 80 also saved about 30 bucks since it was on the commercial account going today to pick up new head bolts... thanks for all the input im trying to think of other stuff i can do while i got it apart to.

well got my head back yesterday and the clipse is back on all fours the only prob was had to break the timing back down after i got it running because i put a new water pump in and i guess the seal moved on me and it was leaking anti freeze
