ok all, i think i spun a bearing or busted a rod on my 95 Tsi. anyway, i am getting ready to tear it completely apart and just start saving money to build it up. i have found a turbo laser with a date code of 1990 on it at a junkyard, guy says he will give me the motor for 150.00, says that the motor locked up or something. it looks to be in decent shape externally, just wondering if it could be rebuilt to use in my 95 or atleast some parts. i know some 1st gen parts are transferable, but i also thought they were only on certain first gen years. what i am wanting to know is, can i use the engine and/or parts of it. if so, what can i use from it?

If you are going to rebuild it what do you mean we need more info. All the 1G motors bolt in the same but there are certain parts that need to be machined. Are you planning on just going with big rods and 2G pistons or an all out rebuild let us know.

i am planning a complete rebuild! i also found out that engine did run when it got to the junkyard, it smoked and the SES light was on. but it did move!!! i will end up getting this motor and i will have my 2nd gen motor also. what would be the best combination on a complete rebuild using major components from the two. do i also need to get the tranny from it.

You will need you tranny because the motor mounts are different. I would use 2G and put them in the 6 bolt motor. You will probably need to get .02 over pistons if the 6 bolt is beyond spec and the 1G big rods will need to be machined for the 2G pistons.
