Can a ported box fit under the top?

I've read about people putting subs under the convertible top in their spyders. I'm assuming that everyone is talking about sealed boxes. I am wondering if there is enough space to put a ported box under the top that doesn't intrude into the trunk. I am hoping to get at least one 10" maybe 2 or a square sub. Is it possible to fit a ported box under the top?

A ported box will depend on how much space you need. I just finished up making a sealed box for under my top. It's not pretty but does exactly what I was looking for. If you want a ported box, you could make it longer, but I wouldn't make it any taller or wider. I was right at the brink of not fitting between the cross bars and rear seat. The top bag is pretty darn close to the sub too.

I see yours is facing up, I'm guessing there's not enough space to make them face the trunk with that little wooden/carpet thing removed?

Im sure a custom ported box will fit and will probably sound the best as well. Just be aware ported woofers require more airspace than sealed boxes. So, I would go with a killer 10 inch sub that is very efficient and uses most of the power it's getting. Have it mapped out so you maximize the length of the car. If it were me, I would do a MTX9500 in there with 1500 watts rms going to it. The power is under rated on those subs and they beat like he11. I'm going to have when I get to this part. Right now in my truck i'm running a Rockford T2 on 1800 watts rms and it quakes. Won't get that in a eclipse though. Last, I would probably have my sub facing down with room for throw and ports facing towards the trunk.

Would that be better than having them face upward toward the convertible top? Also, would it be better to go with a square or round sub for under the top? Also, what about a bazooka tube? Are those any good?

Bass sounds the best and full when it is reflected off of something. Those low end waves will shoot straight out into the air or top. Not much reflection there. If you can't face them to the back, my second choice would be down. Square subs actually move more air, but require a bigger box. I would stick with round. You have limited space. Plus you will need feet on the bottom to make some clearance for air to move if the speakers are facing down. Don't care for any bazooka tubs. But it may fit you. If you like tight bass and not a lot of bass go with a tube. I tend to lean towards more spl than tighter bass. Sorry about the late reply. Been trying to get my GST running for like a month now.

Back when I looked into this, I got several opinions from people. All of them said to go with a downfiring setup, and that 8" ported box would fit well and a 10" sealed box would be cutting it close. I had an 8" sub with I believe a 300W RMS mono amp that sounded pretty damn amazing before the car was taken from me. That would definitely be my recommendation, assuming that you don't want the whole car to rattle when you turn on the radio.

It's ok. Better late than never. Thanks for the info and good luck getting it running again.

Yea my friend has an 8 in his Wrangler and it thumps pretty good. I'll probably go with and 8 in a ported or I might experiment with measurements and maybe attempt a 10.
