Can a bad turbo (shaft play) cause coolant and oil to go out the exhaust?

Its really wierd, for a while I had removed my pcv valve because the stupid autozone valve I replaced with was crappy, so I just left it off. Well yesterday I finnaly got myself to get an oem valve from the dealer. I put it on and went for a short test run and everthing seemed ok. Later that night i left to go bowling and a couple blocks away I started to have blue smoke come out my exhaust and im like oh ****! So I went back home and figured the pcv valve was letting oil get back into my intake. So I drove it to school ,which is about 20 minutes away and it seems to smoke upon deceleration and alot upon acceeration. My turbo was set at 14 pounds of boost and now its at 10.

So today ater school i decided to diagnose what the problem could be, even though im thinking its the head gasket. I take the inlet hose off of my turbo and it has just a ton of shaft play. I also removed the pcv valve to rule it out , and it made no change to the smoke removing it.

What I find odd is i did this right afer I replaced the pcv valve, and my question is just to make sure, can the turbo leak water and oil out the exhaust if it has alot of shaft play?

I just wanna know so I can rule out the head gasket.

By the way, on my pcv valve , on the side that connects to the intake, I cant blow air past it , but I can suck air through it.

And the side that connects to the valve cover is the opposite.

Yes. Definitely.

Your turbo is dead. Replace as soon as possible. Driving on it will only make it worse exponentially. For more signs, take off the lower intercooler hose. Wear some shoes you don't care about, because I'm betting you'll get about half a quart of oil to pour out of it, plus another half quart out of the intercooler.

That would not be a good idea. The turbo will still spin when the car is running. Without oil or coolant, that thing will really be toast fast. Just get a short term loan, or use another vehicle.

Is there any way I can disable the oil and the water to the turbo temporarily until I save and buy a new turbo?

Hahahhaaa.. Sure.. But it'll last like 5 mins.

Just buy a turbo, they're frickin cheap.

Good question...

I'll think about that one.

I bot my DSM with a seized turbo that sat there getting bake more than I was in high school. I replaced the turbo as soon as I got the car with a B16G.

Anyway, blocking off you oil and water will turn that sucker in to a nuclear potato and I would be worried about every thing around it getting a little on the hot side.

My first step would be to get some of the oil out of the inner cooler. That way I'd hope it will help collect as much of the oil it possibly can wile your waiting on UPS to get your 16G to ya.

If you can, keep your foot off the throttle and turn your boost down as much as possible; I'd think that help.

I'd like to hear what a WISE-MAN thinks about maybe wiring the waist gate open and running no boost??? Just a thought!

Switching from a synthetic oil to natural or stepping up to a thicker viscosity may help.

^^^$500 is not cheep for every one.^^^

It is important to remember that the more you drive it, the more that the compressor wheel will rub on the compressor housing, and the more damage is caused. That intern can cause metal shavings from the compressor wheel to go into your intercooler, and possibly into your engine. If the turbo has really bad shaftplay, I would replace it ASAP.

Wait a minute, before you rule out your headgasket you might want to run a compression test. The only way for your turbo to throw coolant through the exhaust is if the center section is cracked all the way through. Otherwise, it's completely sealed off from the oil and shouldn't be pushing it anywhere otherthan out other coolant line. Can you run your turbo without coolant? Yes. Cap off the coolant lines. Is it a good idea? No. The oil holes in the bearing aren't large enough to really support cooling with your water lines attached.
So, anyway. If you're losing coolant I would first look into other areas such as your headgasket, or an external leak.

Thanks for the replies, however the turbo's shaft play is freaking horrible and I dont care if I toast it or not. I dont see how it boosts whatsoever! When I mentioned removing the oil and water lines, I knew it would toast it, I was just wondering if its possible and run with no boost till I get a new turbo. I am going to college for diesel mechanics and money is a little thin :) .

Its odd just a couple days ago I felt for the turbo's shaft play and there was none whatsoever. This bums me out and I dont have the money for a turbo right now , nor any other way of getting a vehicle except to somehow drive my eclipse with this turbo.

You rebuilt a turbo that shouldn't have been rebuilt / wasted your time and money.

Also, a faulty turbo has nothing to do with pushing coolant. It will either leak coolant externally, or put coolant into the oil pan if the bearing housing is somehow cracked.

That's why you send the turbo to a reputable shop for rebuild so they catch when it is just flat out trashed (turbos should usually be rebalanced afterward too). At least the rebuild kits are cheap enough you didn't waste much cash on it.
