I have a 99 Eclipse RS with a 420a. I have just put a new head gasket and lifters on. The old lifters colapsed. I have done the timing belt on it before and retimed it no problem. Now I have done all of this it won't start I was wondering if it could be caused by the slight scarring of the camshaft when the lifter colapsed.

remove timing belt and try to rotate camshafts by the gear bolts they should roll over fairly easy as the springs are small pressure.
bearing area scoring will not cause your car not to start, re verify your timing.

compression + fuel + spark = running engine just have to make all the elements occur when they are supposed to.

Best of luck, and please post the issue when you find out whats going on, it greatly helps others

Thank you I am pulling it apart tomorrow to check timing and go from there I will post again with results.

Delta_Cam is correct in that scarring on the camshaft or journal won't prevent your car from starting, but I would get that looked into right away! Generally, the rule of thumb is if you can feel the scratch with your fingernail, the part has to be resurfaced or replaced. Since there aren't any bearings to replace, a deep enough scratch on either of these components usually means replacing the whole cylinder head or camshaft.

Ok been working on the car all day retiming and retiming. Everytime I get it in perfect time I can rotate it by hand and it does fine but as soon as I try to start it up it jumps time. Not sure what is causing this but any ideas would be appreciated. I also checked out 2gnt.com as suggested but couldn't find anything and it will not let me post so I sent an email to the mod. to get that problem fixed.

I am thinking I may need to rebuild it. I just put the new timing set on there about 500 miles ago. I put a new tensioner on it then and just yesterday bought another new tensioner and replaced it today. So now I am stuck thinking it is an internal issue and I am going to have to rebuild.

Hmm....possibly check your cam pulleys. One may be slipping around because of a broken dowel pin.

What is happenning that the timing is slipping/jumping? Is it just going slack? Or are the marks not lining up after you try to start it?

I put new dowel pins in and I have rechecked them they are still good. It is jumping time I can turn it by han and it will stay in time but if I crank it it jumps a tooth. Thank you for your continuing help.

Could my crank be bent and that what's causing it to jump time? I have just put new camshafts and gears in and I have replaced everything to do with the timing except the crank it self.

Hmm....be sure that ALL the cogs are on the belt and ALL the gear cogs are free of crap. Look down the belt and be sure that the belt isn't crooked anywhere. Or the gears are not crooked anywhere. Can you post up pics? Would like to see the position of your gears when they are at TDC and your belt set-up.

Give us a description of why you think all your lifters collapsed. Curious about that part.

I will get pics up as soon as I can. And only 4 or 5 lifters collapsed I am not sure why they did only thing I can think of is they had 200k miles on them or it was caused by the blown head gasket. But they collapsed about 20 miles after ther new head gasket and headbolts were installed.

I would like to thank everyone for all the help. It turned out that I was losing compression from the cam scoring so I put new cams in and it fired right up. I would like to so goodbye to everyone I am out of the dsm world I sold the car right after I got the new cams in and bought a 3000gt spyder vr4.
