Hey, i'm planning on stroking/boring my 4g63 to 2.4l. Anyone with this setup plz advise on camshafts...i'm planning on aftermarket hiflow intake, springs, etc. Any that have severe stall problems, low-mid end torque/hp death/etc? are the high end numbers worth it in this configuration?

also, what kind of RPMS have you guys been running with this setup?

Forced Performance is currently making a set of cams specifically for the 2.3L and 2.4L engines.
 
FP3=2.3l?
fp4=2.4l?

Worth a try when they come out I guess :)

Do FP cams generally work well when bolted onto factory gears, or will I be needing to invest in adjustable?

What kind of low end power loss/idling trouble have you guys seen with the FP2 and ups? Should I expect to see the same problems from the fp4's?

Rockers.....I'm upgrading to 65lb crower springs/titanium retainers, +1mm steel valves. For 600+hp setup, are new rockers recommended? I'm looking to spin 8500-9000, because the concensus seems to be that's where the power is for the heftier cams

8500-9000rpms for a stroker might be pushing it just a tad. the 2.3 &2.4l dont breath as well at higher rpms. something about cylinder filling and such. I have a 2.4 built with a head similar to what you are planning on with 272's I have no problems with stalling or idle. unless your planning on doing a long rod stroker dont plan on much past an 8k rpm red line. maby I am just to cautious who knows

FP is making the FP3 and FP4 cam to take advantage of the lower redline of the stoker engines.
 
cool, good to know. anyone heard any ETA on release?? checked their website, it doesn't even MENTION them heh
 
im also building a 2.3 stroker. i was continplating using the 90 turbo cams for the $ untill i could pay off my DSM credit card and could aford to buy a nice set of cams. i wasnt aware of FP new cams. that will be nice to have. are their any cams avaliable engeneered specificly for the 2.3l? i'll be running the big 1g rods becasue of $. so i wont need 8000+ redline head. ereckerdeet, if you plan on living up top look into a Dual spring setup.
 
i have a 2.3l stroker in a 1g and have looked into the fp3's............. they said that you need to have double springs on them or else you will get valve float!!!!!! these must me some serious cams in order to need that much tension to close the valves.... i would think that the fp2's would be great since they are said to be better than the hks 272's, and you only need a set of single performance springs, and with your 2.4 your idle will be good, compared to that of a 2.0...... hope that helps :dsm: ;)
 
i kno this might sound crazy and i dont know if anyone else hurd of it but a guy i was talking to around town here has a 2.4l in his 90 gs-t he said he's running stock 1g N/T cams and they're great.. now im not too sure about all that but i've seen his car in action and it's pretty bad ass... if someone can back this up with me id have to say that would be the easyest and cheapest way to go :thumb: :dsm:
 
I run fp2 cams in my 2.3 and they are great and i run ti retainers and springs with ss standard valves with bronze guides . great topend even though i only go to around 7500 max i have taken it to 8 rand once or trice but never had any problems with them only good things to say.. but i would like ot get some insight dyno graph wise comparing the fp 2 to the fp3's and fp 4's
 
call slow boy racing and try the comp 101300's they are very similar to the fp3's just the center line is a little different. good luck.
 
I was going for the 264/272 combo, 1mm o/size valves, crowers springs and tit' retainers with a hx35 holset with bullseye housing on a 2.4/ 1G head , my aim is for all power to be in by 6900rpm which seems to be the go, not interested in above the 7000rpm with the rod ratio the 2.4 has, seems to be playing with a short engine life by over reving these.
 
I've got a 2.3 and I'm using crane cams 0014 grind cams, they're "race" grind and my rev limit is at 8250. no hiccups or studders, and pulls hard all the way to redline, and no loss of power down low either. I can shift @ 3k all day, and the engine will not lug. I have a ported head, ferrera dual springs, ti retainers, pt67 turbo. full boost by 4k and gears set to zero. I've had experience with crane cams before (street grind on a 2.3 with a 50 trim, race grind on a 2.4 with a t66) and they idle and perform better than any HK$ and crower cams I've seen.
 
im building a 2.3 now.. because ross pistons sent me the stroker pistons by mistake and only charged me $430 shipped instead of $600 however much the want for them. they got coated and installed in my bloc before my machine guy called me and told me i had the wrong pistons. they are .020 over 9:1's and i bought the fp cam 2's for my 2.0.. im going to sell my fp RED turbo and get the 3575 and im trying to decide if i should go ahead and run the cam2's or sell them or see if i can return them and get the cam3's instead. 4g64 crank arrived today, any input or suggestions would be great... ive heard go ahead and run the cam3's, i plan on calling and talking to Robert at FP to see what he thinks to.. steven :talon:
 
The FP3's have a steeper ramp angle which will open the valve sooner and thus faster. The valve speed is so great that it will flot the valves with the stock springs. If you are looking for a good set of daily driver/strip cams and want to turn over 8K RPMs I wouldn't go for the FP3's. With the amount of spring pressures needed to run in the higher RPM's and not floot the valves would be very hard on the cams and the Cam journals and all timing components. Engine life would definitly be shortened.

I'm personally looking to turn around 9500 RPMs and I'm definitly going for the FP2's. But that is my choice. and that is my input. I don't see the power difference being enough to ofset the added costs and hassle. Unless it's a pure drag car.

Could you please expand a little further on how the steeper angle will shorten engine life? I understand how it can cause float (not worried since I have dual spring setup) but not following on shortened engine life......
 
The increased spring pressures to run a steep ramp flat tappet cam will put a lot more stress on the valve train and cam journals. This is for a high revving motor I'm talking about. The open valve pressures will be a lot higher like maybe 40% max over stock and the closed seat pressures around 10-15% over stock ussing a dual valve spring. I have a set of tripple valve springs on my 350 that are just insain as far as seat pressures goes. It's a flat tappet solid lifter cam custom ground for a 8-71 from comp cams. The cam usually is the only thing to really wear out on V-8's in this situation. On the 4G63 we don't have replaceable cam bearings and the journals will wear out much faster needing a new head.

Of course you can get your head machined to run roller cam bearings. I've never heard of it for the 4G63 and it's a PITA but it's definitly the way to go on very high revving Large cam motors.
 
My bad, you were talking about the springs. I have never heard of any one having the problems you mentioned but than again i haven't been following this type of thing too closely. I am just starting to build my stuff so I am learning alot.


So journal failure is what i need to watch for?
