after installing my HKS 264 cams, my car shakes like crazy inside at idle and basically anywhere under 2,000 RPM. car idles fine and I like the sound of the cams, but the shaking was more than expected. I still have my balance shafts installed and everything. Anyone else have similar problems?

I did the motor mounts and they weren't as bad as everyone made them out to be; they made the ride quality actually improve on my car because my original mounts were complete shit.

You make me scared about ever doing cams though.

Yea, the motor mounts were not bad at all. But for some reason the HKS 264's make it shake like crazy. kinda takes away from the steetability.:|

My 272's with Prothane motor mounts do not shake at all. What is your idle set at? I have mine around 900. I would check your timing and your balance shafts again. Sounds like you have one off time.

The perfect idle combo of cams is 264/272. Its the not the motor mounts causing your problem. What is your idle set at?

PS / CAUTION - Remove your balance shafts and it feels like your riding a wooden roller coaster!

i know removing the balance shafts would make it worse. my idle is around 850. I didn't touch the balance shaft belt when i did the cams. Any other 1G's with prothane motor mounts have any info?

I run 264/272s with no balance shafts and prothane motor mounts. My idle lopes around 800 or so RPM. When I first put them in the car shook like crazy and I didn't know how people actually put up with it. Give it a few weeks and it will get better. Now the only time it really shakes is sub-500rpm, otherwise it's happy. I can still tell that I have solid mounts, but it's still very streetable. Plus I'm not popping off intercooler pipes or axle boots anymore.

thats the kind of reply I was hoping for. I've only had the cams in for 2 days, so we'll see if i can get used to it.

I run FP2xs (272s w/ wide lobes), and welded solid motor mounts. and no bs belt but still the rear bs:D . Even my wife is now used to the vibration. Not saying that it was not somethign to question, but you'll be fine in a few weeks.

I run BC 272's, No BS, and prothane mounts. My car is stiff as anything. I hear no rattling and the car doesn't shake that much. Idle is around 850. once you get moving the car is smooth as anything. I also think the energy suspension control arm bushings help out a bunch also.

i got the 280hks with the mounts, idle at 800 and it shakes and vibrates like crazy,i love it though

I'm starting to think something with the balance shafts may be off. I noticed more today that it seems to shake again above 5,500RPM. have to take the timing cover off next week when I have time and take a look.

Make damn sure you check the timing. If it's only off a tooth the ECU try's to compensate for it and after a while the car will idle smooth again but it doesn't mean it's "ok" to drive around.

Well I took the cover off again today and double check everything. It all lines up perfect, cam gears, oil pump pick up gear, balance shaft belt, crank, everything! And I will say that after less than a week, I am used to the idle shaking. The only thing that concerns me now is the higher RPM(5,500+) howling noise. I don't know if its just because if the cams themselves making the air sound different going into the motor or what. Maybe i'm just paranoid? I put a timing lite on it and everything and have it at 5 degrees BTC.

is your oil pump in phase? i did it out of phase once and it had alot of vibration. then i fixed it. i run HK$ 272 with the mounts. idles at around 950rpm, it vibrates some but just makes me feel like im in a race car, LOL.

you stated you didn't touch the balance shafts but if you did the cams then you had to mess witht the rear shaft (unless you did them the wire tie and adjustment tool method). it could still be out of phase. if your not sure check the VFAQ to remove the rear bolt and check the balance shaft with a screw driver as stated in VFAQ to see if you are indeed 360 degrees out of phase. the symptoms really sound like thats what it is. I have no BS and solid mounts and my car shakes like mad too but only at idle at 900 or lower.

You hit it right on the head. This all sounds like a symptom of it being out of phase.

i just got my car back it has prothanes bc 272s and the shafts removed at stock idle the thing shakes my car to hell, but damn it has a mean idle. Its in all honesty not as bad as i i thought it would be I know for sure i cant take my gf in a ride in it. She would get a migrane instantly. LOL

I have FP2s and solid motors mounts and my idle is stock 750rpm and the car definitely shakes a lot, but that's only to the point where it feels like a massager?. What DSMCamaro is describing is more of a violent shake, hence it could be the rear balance shaft is out of phase.

Also, a friend has a fully built 2.0, no BS, hks 272, solid motor mounts in the same exact car (1gb) and his car shakes just like mine, no more than any other DSM with motor mounts I've ever been in.
