I was wondering if anyone had any data with before/after results with cams and emissions. How much will cams actually effect your emissions test? I currently run the evoIII but will more then likely be upgrading to a larger turbo so the FP2's would probably be a better but I'm not sure about being able to pass, so I'll probably go with the 1's. If I was awd the 2's would be no problem as they only do an idle test, but being fwd they also do a loaded (equal to a 15% incline or something like that) test around 2500 rpms. I'll dig up my etest from last summer and post the results. Will the cams make a big difference at that kind of load and rpms & is there a big difference between the two as far as emissions go?

The idle test proved difficult to pass without AEM due to the lower vaccum. Under load however, I even passed without a cat. This was done in Oregon where max HC can be 220ppm and CO % a maximum of 1.00. Ultimately, idle will be your biggest worry and this was done on a completely new engine without leaks of any kind. For what it's worth...

Is this true that its the idle test thats harder to pass? I always heard the other way around. I know guys around here with awd have been passing with the larger 272's or FP2's. I've heard of some even passing without a cat, they just lean it out abit more then the guys with one. I can't lean mine out a whole lot as I have to do the under a load test.

well i live in CT and i have a magnus intake manifold and no cat and HKS 272/272 my cars a 96 and i just reset all codes before i go in the testing and it passed with no cat or emisiond stuff hooked up becuase i have a magnus and a bbk throttle body with no vac lines so i think you will be ok

No, I was lying. Why would you ask for first-hand experiences and then question them?

Ignoring your ignorance, let me stress that people in different states have different experiences, obviously due to the different requirements. Thus the reason, I listed the maximum limits in my state, so you could compare them to yours. And people wonder why some of us get frustrated answering these questions.

Sorry man, I was just asking because I had always heard the other way around. Didn't mean to sound rude. So here are the results from my last test:

40 km/h

Limit Reading
HC, 76, 8
CO %, .42, 0
NO ppm, 580, 0

Idle

Limit , Reading
HC, 150, 8
CO%, .7, 0

Looks like were a little stricter then Oregon

Do you have the limits and your readings? Atleast were lucky here by not haveing them scan the CEL.

it sounds like you are still looking at cams so why dont you buy what you want and get the em. test done then that weekend put the cams in? that way you have a year to really worry about it

Well I won't have to get another etest for another year & a half (every 2 years here), but thats not my main concern. For that test I can always lean the car out abit if need be to pass and if I do end up failing I know someone who knows a guy that will pass whatever you want :shhh: . The problem is the cops here. Ya I know its ### but pretty much ever since the movie fast n furious, the cops around here think every import is a street racer and you get pulled over for no reason at all & then handed a bunch of tickets for stuff that isnt really illegal, then you have to go to court, blablabla, back to what I was saying. They are now doing spot emissions test on the side of the road. You fail & I believe they tow your car away, thats what Im worried about. Its not like you can say, Just a minute officer, I just have to screw around with my laptop for a min so I can pass this thing :D

Edit: Cams are a go this winter for sure, just trying to see if I can get away with the FP2's :thumb:

Well I know there are a tonn of guys on here with cams, doesn't anyone else have some before/after emissions data? Awd, fwd, fp1's, fp2's, 264's,272's, 100's etc, doesn;t matter. Just like to know if I'll be able to get away with the larger cams. Thanks

I passed Cali's smog test with HKS 264 272 combo with a RRE cat.

It ran very clean, though a little lean at 2500 rpm.

the intake cam is the deciding factor on the smog test in my local.

Do you know what the limits are in Cali? and were you close to them?

Well I'm leaning towards the Fp2's as a big increase in the low-mid rpms isn't the best idea being fwd & I plan on adding a larger turbo. I just can't find any info on how much the larger 2's (or 272's) actually change emissions. If anyone could give me some before/after results or even if you have the results with the larger cams and what emission systems the car was running it would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Anyone had problems passing with 272's?
I'm planning on using adjustable cam gears. How should they be adjusted to help emissions? Less overlap, right? Advancing intake and retarding exhaust, or just retarding the exhaust will do it? I wanna retard the exhaust cam anyway to help with low/midrange and spool. This will be on a 2.3 by the way, not sure if that affects anything.

Well since this thread has been brought back, I have another question :D . What will the FP x series cams do as far as emissions goes? I would think they would be worse compared to the reg series? or would they make a difference at the kinds of rpms that they do the emissions? I was leaning towards the FP2's but then I thought about the FP1/FP2 combo. Since the FP cams are alot cheeper the HKS I was thinking maybe go the FP1x/FP2x route & spend the extra money on manley springs/retainers.
