Hey everyone.

This is my first post on this site and I'm still a little confused about a few things.
I just bought a silver 95 AWD Turbo DSM about two weeks ago and I plan on modifying it to run at least low 12's. I've been checking these forum's and comparing the different upgrade paths people have taken in order to determine which parts I should choose when I start modifying my car, and I keep noticing HKS 264/272 cam gears on these lists. Can someone please tell me what these numbers mean and which cam's I should choose and why.

Thanks

the 264/272 refers to the amount of time that your intake and ehaust valves stay open :thumb:

Thanks for the quick reply. :D

So, I only have to replace the two cam gears in front, or do I need new camshafts?

Also, won't this make my idle kinda rough?

once again, sorry for all the dumb questions, I've never adjusted cams before.....

probably not a good idea to bump your own thread, its a good way to get it locked and you wont get your question awnsered.

Also what you are talking about the 264 or 272 are CAMS not cam gears. You have to replace both cams in doing this mod. Its obvious you have not read up enough of this to make your car a low 12 second car. Please do some further research its all out there, i promise.

Cams are lumpy yes... cam gears is a totaly diff mod. serving a diff purpose. you cant just toss cam gears in and adjust it "by the seat of your pants" ( or at lest shouldnt )

Look, I mentioned that this is my first post on this forum. I'm just asking for some advice since I'm new to the DSM world. No need to be a smart ass. I've been working on turbo cars for a while now, My last car was a VR4 that I modded to low 12's.

Anyway, so I can just replace the cams and get the desired performance increase, or do I need to replace the gears as well?

search, you had a low 12 second vr4? hmm what turbos did you run, injectors ext? Really im kinda curious.

Also you can get cam gears if you want but if you dont know how to use them which i dont think you do based on this post. Dont get them and get either HKS or COMP cams b/c they can be installed straight up and dont have to degree them to get the car to run right. And i was being serious these questions you are asking are out there.

No offense, and no flaming intended- but you had a VR-4 into the low 12's and you didn't understand what a 272 was? I'm sorry- but I honestly find this hard to believe.

And please, no sarcasm in this, but I pray you prove us wrong.

The 264/272 combo is overrated. Just run 264's or 272's.

The numbers refer to the duration of the cam, it's just the way that HKS differentiates between cam models.

He's right about not bumping threads, there are some "forum etequitte" rules that everyone should follow. You're new so it's not a big deal, but it's something you need to do in the future.

Boost Contoller, 3" turbo to tip dual exhaust (no Cats), Underdrive pulley, Boost Controller @ 18lbs, 450cc injectors, SAFC, Hardwired Supra Fuel pump, weight reduction, Race Gas, and a dammn hard launch=mid to low 12's in 97 VR4. It's a V6 not a four cylinder, therefore I didn't need a cam upgrade.

but that's way off topic... Can I just buy the cams or do I need the gears as well?

p.s. I came to this board for an answer to a simple question and all I've gotten so far is childish arguing. I hope you don't greet all new members on this board with the same courtesy I've recieved so far.

Cams are great upgrades if your engine isn't too tired. Cam gears are awesome too... The gears can help you move the power curve around. I just got a talon tsi. Im going with a few mods a cam isn't one just yet.. at 300 a peice they dont give you that much of a gain.. more boost bigger injectors thats the spirit! Force it on those stock cams thats what the turbo is for. Just my 2cents

274 262 those are advertised duration of the cam in degrees of crankshaft rotation(how long the valve is open until it is closed again)since a cam spins at half the speed of the crank. cams are usually measured at .050in of lift to give you a better idea of how they are going to act. make sure your springs can handle the lift and they are up to the task moving your valvetrain properly. the cam manufacturer can probably recommend a valvespring rating also
