I was putting my 420a back together and forgot which gear was which one says front on it and one doesn’t. Isn't the one that says front the exhaust cam?

All the ones I have ever seen both gears say 2.0 front. You put that side facing out and make sure the dowel pin is lined up with the slot in the gear. The gears are identical so it doesn't matter which goes on which side. When timed properly you will have the writing upside down on one as shown in this picture.

Ok so I did this and my car is backfiring from start and if you pedal the gas a few times it will start but sounds like it has a two step any ideas I have went over the timing so many times with the gears on backwards and the deep lip on the outside I can get it to start just sounds like crap I’m so confused at this point

Here’s a pic of the cams

I’m stumped then I’m prob about to just find a spare motor to throw in it and tear this one down and replace internals the only other thing I can think of is valves

Update I finally had time to take the valve cover off and inspect and there’s two bent valves on the intake side so time to order a new set

Youve probably got more valves bent than just the 2 you can see if the car wasn't running well. It wouldn't run great but should have run on just 3 cylinders. I'm not sure if you were meaning you'll get a full new set of valves or just a set of 2 but, I would recommend doing a leak-down test to determine which ones are bent if you are just wanting to replace the bent ones and leave the good ones.
