Bypassing oil cooler

I want to bypass the coolant from going to the oil cooler. Not for long, just for a short period.
I have searched all over and can't seem to find a definate answer. :confused:

Can I connect the two coolant lines going to the oil cooler and just leave the cooler on?
I realize if its cracked or broken oil would come out of it :nono:, however I don't plan on driving it with the cooler bypassed, just run it (doesn't matter if oil comes out):rolleyes:

SO, will it hurt anything to just barb the two lines together and fire her up?:sneaky:

EDIT: I'm also planning on bypassing the turbo for the first start-up (coolant lines). That shouldn't hurt anything right? 14b turbo (won't be boosting it with no coolant, just fire it up)

I would think that simply bypassing the cooler and turbo would be to easy of an answer.
But I can't seem to think of anything it would hurt, I mean if you barb together the two lines going to the turbo, the coolant will still be flowing normally, same goes for the cooler, right?

I don't think I can hurt anything by bypassing them just to start it up...I don't think it would hurt it even to drive it like that a couple miles, some say no coolant is needed in the turbo anyways and everyone knows the stock oil coolers are a joke.
I'm just hoping someone can confirm my thoughts here or shoot them down so I don't make a mistake.

You're right. :thumb: It ain't gonna hurt a damn thing to bypass it to run the engine for a little bit so barb those hoses together and go for it. As for the turbo not using the coolant lines, that's not a problem either so don't let that stop you. Some people even run their turbos without the coolant lines hooked up without any noticable ill effects. Good luck:)

One more question...
after I bypass those I plan on putting a " T " somewhere in one of the cooling lines so I can run the car and flush the coolant system with the water pump, my question is where is the best place to tap into for this? I was thinking right where I bypass the cooler? Instead of putting a barb in it I was thinking I would put a T in it insead and flush it right there, although I hear maybe the lower heater core line would be better? I'm not sure, what do you guys think?
 
Alot of people T into the heater core line, but it really wouldn't make a difference where you placed the T. Since you've already got it apart at the oil cooler I don't see why you couldn't just put your T there. Go for it.
 
So I Teed into the heater core OUTLET line thinking I could flush out the heater core that way...I'm not getting anything out of that, not even a drop! I have it ran to a valve which I have left open for 4/5 warm ups and still not a drip out of it. I think this means my thermostat is not working, my question is can I just pull it out (the thermostat) for the time being while I'm flushing the system? I don't want to put a new one in there just to get it all clogged up with this gunky oily water!
 
Yeah, you can try taking out the thermostat and then put the thermostat housing back on and stick a garden hose down in there and run some water through it. You should get something to come out of your tee that way I would think. If you get it to come out then you could start your car and run it. I would keep the hose in there with the engine running if you can. Good luck:)
 
Thanks I appriciate the reply, I have however been running it...over and over and over and again. Also draining it over and over, still have not got any from the tee tied into the heater core return line. BUT now that I'm comfortable just pulling the thermostat, I should be able to get coolant through that heater core and get my stuff unclogged, we will see.
