Ok my car is white, and came with a blitz bumper on it thats all messed up, cracked up, paint all gross, chunk missing outta the front. Then I gotta black bumper off a 99. Its pretty clean, little scratches here and there and its dirty, but a nice bath will fix that. Thing is i'm getting the black one painted when I can get the money for it, but I don't know when that is, and i'm getting tired of looking at the ugly blitz :barf:. Now should I wait until I get it painted and drive around with the busted blitz? Or drive a white car with a black stock bumper until I can get it painted? Oh and i'd be missing one corner light.

Either way it doesnt matter. They'll both look funny. I'd opt for the original bumper though.

Do I need anything except the actuall bumper to install it? If I already have all the stuff on the blitz? If I took white spray paint to the black bumper, to make it look a little better until I can get it stripped and painted again will it hurt it? Or will it look too ghetto.

You should be able to just put that oem bumper right on unless there's something different with the 99 eclipse body style and the 97 eclipse body style that i don't know about. You can try high gloss accrylic spraypaint if you want, it won't look too bad.

Will the paint hurt the bumper when I decide to get it professionally painted?

No your bumper will be fine. They'll just have to sand the paint off, but they'll have to do it anyways since your bumper is black to begin with so you'll be spending the same amount of money either way.

So what do I need to do the paint? Just a can of white high gloss acrylic spray paint? How many coats and do I want to use primer or clearcoat?

dont spraypaint your bumper or your paintjob later on will not work out it will cost you a lot more because prep is going to be horrible for whoever is painting it. Acrylic paint causes a chemical reaction when laquer or base coat/clear coat is sprayed on top of it. It will cause almost like a cracking look to it and it will do it until you can scrape every last speck of acrylic out from under the paint. Then you have to paint it again because your first attempt got scraped off with the acrylic paint so you would be wasting a lot of money. I own a business (as a partner) and we face this problem a lot,its bad believe me.

Body shops generally don't strip off the underlying paint unless it is specifically requested or the paint is horribly damaged. They usually just scuff it and paint over.

You may not believe it, but my front and rear bumpers, mirrors, and top half of my car are all rattle canned. Its hard for most people to tell in person. And for all the haters, I will be properly spraying the entire car this summer when it warms up outside.

Stay away from the acrylics. I just used the plasti-kote touch up cans you can get almost anywhere. For the bumpers I used about 4-5 cans each, along with primer and clear coat. The mirrors and roof of the car got no primer or clear (I think they look better than the bumpers do). Since I will be painting the car myself, I don't mind the extra prep that I will have to do now.

If you end up going the rattle can method, just do good prep work and you will be okay. However, nothing beats a proper spraying.

Most shops will only charge you $100-$200 for a scuff and spray of a bumper if you bring the piece to them. That way they don't have to mask off the car or anything. Of course, if the bumper needs more prep to fill scratches, etc. it will cost more. I'd just suck it up and have it done professionally.

definately have it done professionally or by someone you know that has a compressor and a paint gun. It shouldnt be that expensive just save up the money and get it done right. Do you really want to be driving around with a nice DSM with a ghetto paintjob or black bumper on a white car? Just leave the blitz for now.

Yeah it shouldnt be too expensive, i got my front and side skirts done for $175 and they turned are pretty good.
