I'm about to burn my car.

2 days - 2 new CPS, New timing belt, and a new MAF, cleaned the throttle body

The car keeps changing the timing, it'll run hella rich, then way lean.

Now underboost, it dumps black smoke like a diesel with the fuel pump cranked up.

Why does my car hate me? I baby the hell out of it.

You wont burn it. You'll sell it before you burn it.

Do you have any CELs?

I found your problem o.o

DSMs aren't babies! :O They don't like being treated as such! LOL

I'm not so sure about that. constantly WOTing everywhere I'm sure doesnt help our cars along either

Are you sure you aligned the timing belt properly? Sounds like it is off a tooth. Did you replace your timing belt before it broke or after? If you replaced it after it broke did you verify that you don't have any bent valves? When you replaced your MAF did you connect it back up? Have you done a boost leak test?

What do you mean by changing the timing?

+1 Do you mean base timing or timing during driving? Base timing should always be 5* BTDC with the timing pin grounded. Without the pin grounded and during normal idleing/driving the timing will fluctuate based upon load, speed, RPMS, etc. If your timing is changing (retarding) during WOT pulls, it's likely due to knock.

What do you mean with the fuel pump cranked all the way up? You should only be running stock fuel pressure unless you have compensated for a higher fuel pressure using a tuning device. That might explain your black smoke issue.

By the timing thing, It'll advance itself, and retard itself.

I'll assume you don't have ECMLink or EvoScan and are on the stock ECU, since both of those have actuators to put the ECU into base timing check mode. What are you logging with?

Since you have a 97, unless you tell the ECU to hold timing constant with a MUT command, it will fluctuate several degrees at idle, anywhere from 0-13* BTDC is normal according to the FSM (at 750rpm idle, +/- 100). The 97-99 DSMs do not have a base timing connector to ground like the 2Ga cars.

As for running rich/lean, we'll need more specific info on that. Like a datalog or a very very descriptive explanation. I really hope you're not getting that from looking at a narrowband gauge.

Black smoke is either overfueling or oil burning, most likely overfueling due to a bad boost leak, especially since you say it happens primarily under boost. Do a boost leak test. Actually do it, don't just look at it and say it's good.

I had my mechanic, who happened to have a tectrix ( I think that's how it's spelled ) kit for the black case ECU, which I had, tune, and look at everything, he said everything looked good. As for the boost leak test, it failed miserably on it's face. the hose at the bottom of the BoV, was completely split down the middle, replaced it, along with all the other vacuum hoses on the car, and it runs great now. I had 1000 CC injects installed on the car about a week and a half ago, with a wally 450LPH fuel pump to, and they weren't properly tuned in the ECU, the tectix fixed that right up.

Going to the DYNO tomorrow to see what it's putting down.
Will post numbers, and pictures of it. Maybe a video to.
