my balance shaft belt sliped on me and i was wondering what could cause this to happen? the belt did not snap off but the grooves on the inner side of the belt was worn completely. it's flat on both side of the belt and i guess it's not spinning with the bs sprocket. suppose to have bumps and align with the bs and the crank sprocket... would it effect my timing on my cam gears and sprocket? would realignment for timing needed? what would happen to the car if alignment were off?

The balance shaft could have seized up.

Cut the belt and remove it at a minimum.

Otherwise you'll need to replace the balance shaft bearings or completely remove it all with a balance shaft elimination kit.

it COULD have messed up the timing but i doubt it. either way it's nothing to joke about, just check it, takes only a few mins to check vs several hundred to fix. When my BS seized up it grenaded my BS sprocket :/ so i figured it was a good time to eliminate the BS's LOL.

You need to pull the timing belt either way, to either replace the front BS if it seized up or eliminate them both(you can leave the front one in if you can't get it out, but you have to remove the back one). But in the mean time don't drive w/o making sure your timing marks are still good

Not to thread jack and I'm sure this has been asked. but if your car is running great and timing marks are all still inline wouldn't cutting the bs belt not be a good idea? don't you need that belt in there unless you completely remove the bs? like taking out the belt and leaving everything else alone isn't a good idea for long periods of time is it?

On my 1g i am doing the bs removal so i wont have any worries but i'm just kind of worried bout tellin someone to just cut it i mean i know its just a counterweight and combats the engine but i dunno cutting it to me just doesn't seem the way to go...i think just removing it and being done is best. mo. but anyways thanks guys. so on my 2g i drive daily shoud i just cut that lil belt off and be done or would i have anything i would have to worry bout? just don't want to screw anything up can't aford to be down.

what would be the symptoms if the timing mark is off while driving? i keep on feeling vibrates (in gear) and loss of power.. my bov would sound very low and i would hear like a belt is flapping on the cover of the timing belt like it being loose. when i rev hard, i would hear like the belt snapping off. it would died while shift to neutral... but nothing.

i took it to the shop yesterday where i have the same mechanic who swap my motor in...he re align the timing marks everwhere and he said it's still acting that same...what could possibly be the problem.???
