broke turbo manifold bolt- HELP!

i was changing the manifold to turbo gasket and when i was tightening the bolts back up i broke one in the turbo... so now i have 3 botls holding it on and a new gasket.... took it for a ride and i dont hear any exhause leaks.... my question is how can i get the broken bolt fixed??? and is it bad to run the car with just 3 bolts?

i had driven my car one night and got home to do the hope nothing looks wrong check under the hood after getting on it a bit...and to my surprise one of the turbo bolt was jus chilling... sitting in the manifold not torqued down at all sooo i don't see a problem runnin 3 bolts....but maybe it could be drilled out and be re threaded as for bolts i am now proud to say im rocking the ffwd bolts...arp babyyy....beautiful bolts i might add i don't know if i helped u but figure id let u know what happened to me with the bolt ordeal

Pull the turbo, take the turbine housing to a machine shop and let them remove it. Otherwise, it will ALWAYS leak from there.

Agreed, you also will have hard time drilling through the turbo bolt anyway. Better pay a shop on this one. I would also suggest replacing all the bolts as well if they've been on there for a while. Good luck.

they were new bolts i was using.... snapped it real nice ... im gonna go with the 3 bolts and see what happens... im just got the car runing and tuned and i dont want to take that damn turbo out again... im frustrated and sick of it... i just got the oil return line leak fixed so i dont want to mess with it...

You can remove the turbine housing from the center section without touching the oil lines.

i dont have good luck with an easy out.... i was told i should be ok running the 3 bolts...

You could take it to a muffler shop and have it done.

take an hour and pull the turbo out. Easy out will snap for sure. Take the turbo to a machine shop as mentioned. Thats what I always do.

If there is a little of the bolt sticking out, you could weld a nut to the end of it. If not, definately take it to a machine shop.

I also broke one of the bolts off, luckily it broke at the head and not at the threads. I was able to remove it with a stud remover.

Safest bet would be take it to a machine shop type business like one that does head work or flywheel brake rotor type machining.

Could do it yourself with some pb blaster, a left hand drill bit, and a set of easyout type tools. It may be in there so good that the easy outs have a chance of breaking off in there though


Hey, are there any other options besides ARP for those four bolts? What grade of bolt is necessary?
I was thinking of getting some stainless ones from a fastener place...wasn't sure if that would be best though.

Hey, what about the ones from the dealer, the OEM ones. I heard those work really good.

I suppose I should try there and see what the price is. I usually forget about the dealer cause I'm pretty used to them wanting alot of money for things (like $8 for a bolt for my pickup). I have been surprised once or twice by low prices though...probably give them a call later.

I hate to pick on you, but this is the reason that we get all kinds of, "my DSM isnt reliable I am going to sell it for somethign else."

If you would take the time to do it right then you wont have more problems down the road. Take the exhaust housing off and have it fixed.

SBR.com sells replacement bolts. Easy outs work too. Drill the bolt slightly, put the piece in, and then back it out.

I just called the local stealership and they quoted me $9.72 each plus tax OUCH!

You sould be fine. I only have 3 in my Laser on 14psi and my boy only has 3 in his GSX who running 22 psi. If it leaks fix it if it dont keep driving.

I agree with the others. Don't chance it. I had the same thing and it took 15 drill bits to get it out. And yes they are extremely hardened so if it broke an easy out will break even quicker. (I tried that too). Do it right and take care of the problem to save yourself headaches down the road.

the reason y i dont want to take the turbo out is because i was having a problem with the oil return line leaking an di finally got it fixed and i dont wanna have leaks again by taking it off and putting it back on... ive been driving the car the past couple days hard and so far so good.... sounds good and runs amazing...

Like others have said you can take just the exhaust housing off and leave the centersection on. That will allow you to keep all water and oil lines intact so no worries as to trying to get it to reseal. The bottom line is that it needs to have 4 bolts in it. If you want to drive around with a half assed setup then by all means go for it. But if you want your car to run right them put a new bolt in.

maybe im just an idiot which i probably am but i dont see where just the center piece comes out without touching the oil lines?? its a garrett t3/t4 50 trim...
