I got a great deal on a NEW, still on the crate, mitsu labeled, 7-bolt short block. I was just curious if the later 7 -bolts were revised in any way to combat CW issues. I haven't heard of many 98-99's with CW.

And don't burn me for buying a 7-bolt! It was cheap, easy, and it wont see any race tracks. The time for 6-bolt will come.

Thanks!

The later engines had a 3 piece thrust, thats all I know of anything different that pertains to CW. I'm not to far away from where you are, hit me up if you need help putting it in.

what evo crankwalked? post up some facts before you start makin claims. CW is over rated.

Later 7 bolts are also rumored to have a weaker block alloy compared to the 93-early 95 7 bolt blocks.

Thats what I thought too until i acctually started to measure a few cars. Guess what, over half the cars I have measured were over tolerances or well on their way. Just beause your pedal does't stick to the floor or you don't have ticking doesn't mean you don't have crank walk. Have you measured your end play? I'm willing to bet that your more than half way out of the tolerance range. I thought my car was fine until I measured it, oops, crankwalk is coming...

were did you get the block from? how much was it, and what was included :thumb:

i just put a 6 bolt motor in my car, and ever since ive had it the 7 bolt motor has acted up. I finally decided to see if the crank would move if i just jerked on the flywheel. I didn't even measure the endplay but it moves a good bit. i think people do over rate crankwalk because it doesnt happen as much as people think, but it definately happens quite a bit.

Exactly. My car was making over 350whp when I found out it was crank walking. I had blown my tranny at the track and when I was checking it out on the lift I decided to pry on my crank pully. Sure enough it was walking and had no symtoms of it. I have seen three crank walked 2G's in my relitivly small local dsm club (25 members). Bottom line is you are much more likely to speed up the crank walk process if you are making decent power and have a stronger than stock clutch.

i walked my rebuilt 7 bolt motor in 10,000 miles

i really didn't have any signs other than the inconsistant clutch pedal but i thought it was hydraulics. Till the knocking started and i pulled the trans and yanked on the flywheel 3mm of endplay OMG .

Don't forget about it. It does happen :thumbdown

I would swear he asked in his first post not to flame on him because he found his motor cheap. Maybe not though...

to answer his question ... the later 2gs had revised 3 piece thrust bearings, however I have still heard of a few that cw'd. Just put the motor in and hope for the best. Not much else you can do.

I can hear a slight clink in my 7bolt when I yank on the flywheel. I also have some somewhat inconsistent clutch enguagement. But the movement of the crank is so small I have to concentrate really hard to notice the movement, its like 1/3 of a mm. It has 85k, and guess what when I was cleaning the block I noticed that the balance shafts have been removed? Makes me wonder if it crankwalked once before and nobody told me about it. I still wanna kill the assclown who lied to me about this car.

I just got the motor all blinged up and ready to go back in :D Since the transmission decided to make some popping noises and nothing was even broken. I got 2 more 6bolts layin in the garage though complete.

Seeing how the factory limit is somewhere in the range of 11 thou, 1/3 mm = 13 thou, you'd better break out your calipers and do some measuring.

The service manager at mitsu told me the same thing about the revised block. After walking my completely stock car twice (early production 95 tsi), they decided to switch to the revised block. 50k later and the motor is still running stong, however I have not meassured crank play... Im a little afraid of the results...

If a motor has 115k or more,is it safe to say
it most likely won't have a CW issue?
Why is there so much hype about replacing w/ a 6bolt?
I know "bigger head studs,no cam angle sensors, etc."
They still walk too.I would think I'm in the clear
w/ that many miles.I think 7bolts just aren't
as ez to find yet.By all means, correct me

Any motor can get crankwalk, 6 bolts do it about 1000x less frequently than 7 bolts though.

my 98 crankwalked - where'd you find this brand new motor? the dealership?

i feel for you fellow walked people. mine walked recently and i have yet to drive in three months since. there are so many options and so many opinions that i'm almost sick of talking about it. "get a 6 bolt" , "rebuild the motor you have" , "buy another 7 bolt short block and just swap it in"....etc.

Here is really how it is. Chances are things are going to break when you push them past factory standards. You take that chance. Take your 7 bolt you just got hooked up on, put it in, and ENJOY driving your car man. Or else sit around and bullshit and end up like me...REALLY WALKING.

btw, how much was that short block...im dying to know!

Somebody needs to raise the flag on your post so I will do it.

I searched over on evolutionm and found nothing about crankwalk in evo's.

If something is wrong with the evo the people are all over it, evo owners are VERY picky.

I've never heard of any of the EVO 4G63 motors crankwalking, perhaps some of the older ones did. However I know for a fact that the new EVO VIII's that are being sold here in the USA do NOT have crankwalk issues. Sure any motor can crankwalk but the new EVO 4G63 motors do not have excessive cases of crankwalk like the 2G 7 bolts do.

If evo's do in fact have excessive crankwalking problems, mitsubishi needs to feel the repercussions this time... I think its totally bs that it wasnt a recall. They claim its not a safety issue... I was driving on the highway when my CAS went out due to excessive crank play. My CAR STALLED AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS! Tell me how that is not a safety issue.

Sorry im just venting
