ok i was drivin to work this mornin and man are the roads bad, like a foot of snow over night, and i went to press on the brake, and it pushed back, and made a grinding like sound, any ideas??

Assuming it wasn't anything dramatic, it sounds like your ABS was working. The pulsating in the pedal is normal, and I would imagine the sound would be the ABS pump on the car. Now if you don't have ABS...hmm.

Not really sure what you mean by the grind, but it could be your piston calipers sticking out grinding against your rotors. If thats the case, id definitely get it fixed right away.

yes i have abs, but i also drive a toyota MR2 and it has abs, and that never happened, and for abs to work the tires need traction right? i was on ice and snow, it only does it sometimes, not every stop just every 4th or 5th, and the car doesnt slide like i've locked it up, but thanx for the input, i do need new pads, not right away, but there was a slight vibration starting in the fall

As I understand it, ABS works like this: If the computer senses that a wheel has stopped turning, it sends pulses of brake power to that wheel to allow it to continue to turn, preventing the wheel from locking up and allowing the driver to keep control (in theory). The car shouldn't slide like you've locked it up, assuming the ABS is functioning properly, because it shouldn't be locking up at all!

Is it happening regularly every 4th or 5th? It could be that the ABS is only activating sporadically, depending on the road conditions.

The fact that there were "slight vibrations in the fall" leads me to believe that those slight vibrations have evolved into "bigger problems" in the winter. Get under the car and check out the the condition of pads, rotors, etc, if you really think it's not the ABS.
