Hey guys, relatively new DSM owner here. The 2g Eclipse was one of my dream cars to own and I was extremely happy with it. I got a stock 4g64 engine with nothing changed to it at all and we'll maintained .Only a fresh paint job, previous owner was an old man that took very good care of it. No rust either, only driven in summer and has an automatic transmission.

The GF wanted something that could take us from point A to B with no issues. Test drove it and it was so great I had to buy it so I did. Thought it would be a great daily, hearing what people had to say bout it.

Fixed the A/C at a garage I trusted and it kinda worked badly depending on the weather after the job was paid for. The warmer it got outside ,the worst it would be, would only give hot air when I need some cold air. Still stuck with it and shortly after, radiator got pierced , had to urgently go get it fixed or it would get dangerous , so I did and a few days after, the transmission oil pipe got pierced on the highway and the car started smoking from the inside, scaring the gf about the car.

After 3 repairs in a row, in a short span of time, I'm just wondering if it was a streak of bad luck or is it just bound to happen? I love that car and and really want to keep it but school makes it hard to maintain and we just want something that could handle a road trip from CA to NY from time to time without breaking down. I don't plan to mod it in any way its appearnce

Is a fully stock GS reliable or should I sell it to someone who can better take care of it?
I don't see much info on the GS 4g64 engine so anything regarding reliability without modification would help.

Thank you kindly,

These cars CAN be made to be reliable, but most are not, in my opinion. I've owned 10 2G's now, and only 1 was reliable, until it wasn't. Being that yours is stock, and non-turbo, it will make for easier maintenance and upkeep. If someone says that their car was always well maintained, don't believe it. They could be completely honest, but I always trust my own opinion on that. If you aren't mechanically inclined, then have a trusted person/shop look it over so that you can know all the potential problems. These cars are about to turn 30 years old, and parts are getting even more rare than they were. It will be harder to maintain them properly in the years to come.

The hoses/piping/lines on the car are 25 years old. You will probably be chasing these issues for a little while, but a non turbo spyder is overall pretty reliable, for a 25 year old car ;). Take good care of your top and window motors.

I'd highly suggest getting a socket set and start learning if you want to own a car of this type. I don't think Mitsubishi intended for them to still be on the road as daily drivers at this age.
