Hey all,

I wanted to get some opinions on this. Since my Talon is my daily driver, I try to stay out of boost as much as possible. 99% of the time that I DO boost, I only do it intentionally. I generally rev up to between 2500-3000 RPM before I shift, while staying between 1-5 in. of vacuum on my boost gauge. My shift points are normally --

1st-2nd -- 10-15 mph
2nd-3rd -- 25 mph
3rd-4th -- 38-40 mph
4th-5th -- 45 mph

I understand that the 4G63 is a tough, reliable engine, but what I want to know is, how much further can you extend the life of your engine, crank, tranny, and everything else by being this gentle?

Now, as far as crankwalk is concerned, it seems to me that the number one factor in the equation is the clutch. From all I've read here and elsewhere, upgrading your clutch has more of an impact than any other upgrade for inducing crankwalk. However, even though I have the stock clutch, I want to get your opinions on my technique --

What I do is simply avoid keeping the clutch pressed down as much as possible. If I'm slowing down for a light, I put it in neutral and release the clutch, just relying on my brake to stop me. When I shift during daily driving, I try to make it as smooth and gentle as possible -- more specifically, I start releasing the gas a split second before I depress the clutch, and then after shifting I will press on the gas just a tad to "catch the revs" and stop them right at the point they will be at anyway in the next gear, and then slowly release the clutch.

So what do YOU do with your cars when driving normally to make them last, and what ideas do YOU have for driving technique to avoid inducing crankwalk?

Thanks guys, I look forward to the replies!

hey edwardnorth, if you dont mind me asking what did you pay for your talon. I cant belive it only has 11,XXX miles on it

Low teens.

Yeah, It had 11,380 the night I picked it up, but its up to 13,1xx now since I've been driving it and enjoying it non-stop since I got it! :)

This post is not giving a good outlook. CW is overrated at best and it happens to even the guy that treats his car like a Lamborgini (sp).

As for your "technique", it is a great way to preserve your DSM. You will get alot more out of your car by driving it in a way that pleases you. Keeping it out of boost will also be lighter on your wallet.

On a side note, take what I posted here.....

They can take alot of abuse. Just not repeated. Keep her properly maintained and you will enjoy it more.

And what others have said about the stock engine being built for it. The 4G63T is one of, if not, the best built stock engines. Again, CW, is overrated at best. Don't drive your car with this in your head or you will be freakin out at every rattle (2G's rattle) shake, and bump your car makes. I did it for the first week and then saw many of the DSM guys at a meet and quickly changed my mind.

Hell, my 1,400 mile F350 work truck is in the shop now. Nothing I did, just has a problem.

Thank you Midnight for helping this post get back on topic. I appreciate your insight and will keep it in mind.

No problem.:thumb:

The best answers are all still opinions. It sounds to me like you are enjoying your car. That is all that matters.

Have Fun!:D

I told my boss this before he bought the last fleet. Believe me, this is not a truck I pay anything for. Diesel is free and so is the truck. The trade off is I can drive it anywhere (when it works) and he gets a free moving billboard when I take it to the grocery store.

Atleast it keeps the miles low on my GS-T. 47k on a stock block in a 97 is outstanding.:shhh:

EdwardNorth i admire the way you think but goddamn just drive the freakin car! You are suffering from what i call DSM NEWBIE SYNDROME. You read through the forums about CW and all the unrelaibility dsm's have. So you then realize that you are broke or you don't want to be broke so you drive your car like 80yr. old woman in an 89 Cadillac going to church. What you have to realize is that half the unrealibility stories you hear are coming from guys that are far from stock. Anything that isn't stock is going to have problems sooner or later. The next thing you have to realize that this is a tuning/performance forum that talks about modifying. Bringing up a post about driving you car like a grandma to make the engine last is irrelevant. Go to your local dealer to ask that question. If you want to put on 50 trim and run 11's then you have come to right place.

Amen

Keep your car maintained and drive the #$%% out of it. That's what it was built for. If you do lose your engine, it's not THAT expensive to drop in another one. It's certainly worth the enjoyment of daily boosting to possibly have to replace the motor a bit sooner.

Since nobody knows definitively what causes crank walk, the advice you receive on prevention techniques may not even work! Once you start modding your car and figure out what you're doing, dropping a new engine won't scare you much anymore.

Just keep reading up, learn more about your car, and most of all have FUN bro:thumb:

Yea im with guy above me! buy an engine stand, get a 6 bolt block and head, and build it. Then when your 7 bolt engine dies you have an engine right there ready to go. you could also buy the block and head rebuilt if you have an extra 3g layin around.
