boosting a 420a

Hey! I just have a few questions on boosting my 420a motor because im looking into going turbo.

1) What is the best size turbo to use.(trim wise)

2) What is the max boost that i can run on stock internals.

3) How much boost should i run daily.

4) What internals do i need if any, and where is the best place to get the parts.

Hi,

1. This is a personal question.. Not like asking about hygiene habits kind of personal, just a matter of preference.. I like my 50T, but everyone's different..

2. This is dependant on setup, miles on the car, the drivers style, and so many other things.. I have ran for months on 11psi daily, eventually you will crack ringlands at this level, no matter how right on the fuel is..

3. Unless you have a rebuilt motor ready to drop in, or you don't need a daily driver for a months time, 7-8psi should be your max.. This is assuming you have a FMIC.. Un I/C, I'd recommend no more than 5psi at any time..

4. If you're planning on more than 8psi, (which if you're not, you soon will) You'll need forged pistons and rods as well as an aftermarket clutch.. Also the rebuild kit that goes with it of course.. I recommend that you also get head studs, a data logger, and a good fuel setup.. MS or 8 injector your pick.. Many fuel setups get the job done, but your fuel setup will always stand improvement until you are running a 1:1 fpr..

^^Good answers right here. Just my two sense though, I would stay away from the 8 injector setup. I mean yes it works and people make alot of power with it, but the 4 injector setup is tried and true. Why spend money on fabrication of an 8 injector setup when you can use only 4 injectors just as well and its way less complicated. Your new to all this I am sure so I suggest you search on these boards and see what other people have done. Good luck to you.:thumb:

Because you can't use the four injector set up just as well.

For simplicity, and lower boost applications, an FMU and a Walbro are the way to go. Once you really start to boost, though, you'll obviously need more fuel. From that point, get whatever system you want - but an eight injector set up will end up being able to feed more than enough fuel when you need it, while still maintaining stock driveability and gas mileage while in closed loop mode.
 
I have to defend the MS and EIC alike.. Yes you can do the job with 4 injectors and MS, and can do it well.. You can also do it well with an 8 injector.. But to say that 8 injector is too expensive, that's false.. I admit, the portfueler is pretty high, but that's what you get for a nice manufactured piece of hardware.. For a low cost 8 injector you need an EIC, (034 EIC is most widely used in our apps..) 4 aluminium injector bungs, a stock fuel rail,(95 / 96+ your call on modifications) fuel hose, And -AN fittings (or remove schrader valves to link rails).. The only fabrication part in this is to drill holes / weld bungs into the mani.. The bungs are no more than 5 dollars a piece, and if you can't / don't want to weld aluminium, a shop should do it for under $30... You don't need to factor in the costs of injectors or the 1:1 regulator as this is required of both setups.. It's a $<500 job..

MS is a great tool, with datalogging, timing tuning, and the fact you don't have to plumb an extra 4 injectors.. So it shouldn't be knocked on either, as it's proved itself on many forum cars..

My advice is to read about both setups, see the pros/cons of both setups, talk to people with the setups, get their opinions on installation/use, and then decide which route you'd like to take.. They both work, they're both reasonably priced if you want them to be, and they're both necessities for running any kind of real boost...

(I assume this is about 8inj vs. MS.. If infact it's 8inj vs RR-FP + larger injectors/SAFC/or anything else under the sun other than MS or Standalone, the choice is beyond obvious)
