Hey dudes i have a bit of a problem with my 97 eagle talon tsi. my car was tuned of an apexi safc2 controller but i unhooked it a while back so its running off the stock ecu. it was running fine until a few weeks ago. now whenever i hit boost on low OR high boost settings its like it looses power. it hits boost and displays it correctly but its like when i hit boost it stops going or else just very slowly accelerates like its bogging out. if i easy VERY slowly on the gas into boost it sometimes catches right and pulls like it should but if i dont easy on it slow enough it lags like a MF. i also JUST replaced my plugs and wires so they are fine. and another thing is whenever i hit higher boost and it takes off it backfires like crazy and ive been told its shooting flames out the tip. almost sounds like a shotgun going off. keep in mind my car is running pretty damn rich so i figured its just the unburnt fuel detonating. please help me out guys. does it just need a tune? is it a boost leak? need help here!:ohdamn:

is it an easy fix? where would it most likely be? and is the detonation hard on the car or not that big of a deal? i was told that if my boost gauge is reading correct vaccum when i rev it in nuetral its not a boost leak.

i just went out and turned my car on and used the throttle cable to rev it as i looked for it. i belive i found the leak right where the piping comes off the turbo where it runs behind my radiator. theres a spot where the 2 pipes meet and its connected with a rubber piece and theres air blowing out of the rubber piecer where the piping meets. is it most likely the rubber piece or the piping?

just got done going through all the piping. fixed the leak i found but didnt find anything else. i took it for a drive after it was all back on and its still doing it but not quite as bad but still pretty good so im not sure at this point.

check engine light is on again i cleared it a little bit ago and it said it was a bad wastegate actuator. would that have something to do with it?

i was told by 3 people it may be a vaccum leak?

it WAS tuned on safc2 but it was disconnected and now runs off the stock ecu. idt its a slipping clutch because it only does it sometimes. other times it will pull like its suppose to.

First off, why did you remove the SAFC 2? If you don't have another tuning solution in it's place I would not be attempting to run 'high boost' as you say. You also need to get a wideband o2 setup. It is dangerous to run without one when you start pushing boost beyond where your car would have normally hit fuel cut.
You need to fix your boost leaks and get the SAFC 2 hooked back up and dialed in once you get a wideband.

i unhooked the safc2 because some guy onhooked my battery and ruined my tune everytime i would start the car it would stall out in neutral so i unhooked it. and i cant find any other boost leaks

I just read your profile. You say that you have 450cc injectors right? I would turn your boost down to about 13psi or so.

So the car backfiring sounds like fuel cut. Because your turbo is too big for your untuned injectors. Your profile says evo 450 injectors, if that is right turn your boost down to 11lbs or so. Buy a wideband and some larger injectors (650 cc). And then tune your car.

i have the evo3 16g turbo and the 450cc injectors. and iv had it on low boost which is set at 12psi and it still lags

i been using the same setup for a while and never had a problem with it before the tune was messed up

The thing is, with 450's there isn't really anything to tune.. I'm pretty sure the SAFC is supposed to be zeroed across the board. Without it, the ECU should be able to compensate for them since it's what it came with factory.
Something isn't right with the car. You're still leaking boost or something. Have you checked your turbo for shaft play? A turbo on it's way out may or may not make it difficult to build boost.

evo3 16g has a little lag, you need get a nice tune and setup the right time for the fuel to come on to the turbo and etc settings, timing and what not for it to be a good beast quick turbo tune. Looks like you got some work to do. Read up on peoples 16g setup see what there running for 16g power DSM Dyno Challenge - Big_16g. Stock ecu only works with 450cc injectors, and any changed to any car that is not factory setup will not run properly, it may run somewhat seeming ok but it's not actually right. Whats your spark plug gap?

im not sure on that one. I was going to just take the talon to a pro tuning garage and have them find the problem and fix and tune it because i just started a new job and have absolutly no time anymore. would you guys know of a good place with an awd dyno around harrisburg pa that could do it for a reasonable price?

I would say get the safc back in....

Also, did all this start to happen before OR after you did the tune up? What did you gap your plugs to? What plugs did you use? Does it drive well out of boost?

i got rid of my safcII super airflow converter because no one around my area (Harrisburg) tunes safc. and it started doing it after i took it out but not until a few weeks after. and i dont know what you mean by my plug gaps. and yes out of boost it drives 110%.

idt its shaft play my turbo sounds and looks fine. but i want to check just to be safe. how do you check for shaft play?

checked my turbo and there is no shaft play so its not the turbo. someone said it may be my clutch slipping but i have an all but brand new clutch and like i said it only lags in boost
