I bought a new turbo and it came with its own boost controller. But I have to take off a radiator fan just to get to it, and I hate that little clip that you have to remove. Plus I can only shorten the bar a half turn, because if I do anymore I can connect the rod anymore. So can I buy a different boost controller that will override that one? If so what are my options and what should I get. It doesn't have to be fancy, Just something easier than what I have now.

Um that's a waste gate unless I'm missing something. A boost controller will hook up to that nipple and a boost reference port. Adjusting that rod is only going to adjust how far the flapper opens when you hit the desired boost. Like I said unless I'm missing something.

Yes it is the waste gate. But adjusting it to controls how far the waste gate opens, at least I thought it did. I know it adjusts the boost because it was running steady at 8 pounds then my friend shortened the rod by a half a turn and now its running at a steady 10 sometimes more.

If you want to turn the boost up you are going to need a manual boost controller. The wastegate is preset to a certain psi (probably 9-11 psi) and adjusting the rod is only used to set the preload on the wastegate flapper.

Might want to do a little reading on how an internal wastegate functions. The only way you're changing out what you see there would be to weld your flapper and go with an external setup. Otherwise, a Manual Boost Controller is what you're looking for.

Here is a good read, also, if you'd like to look into various boost control methods with some basic information about each.

Also - I'd hold onto the receipt for that ebay turbo. There's no telling how long it'll hold together, especially if you plan on cranking the boost up.

+1 on that, I tried my luck with an e-bay 16g and it only lasted 300 miles before it had major shaft play

With my ebay e3 I was creeping to 20 psi..Had it on the car for a year or more..Had no shaft play when I took it off..You want it, its behind my couch..:)

Ya thats the wastegate OP..It will be take off and bolt in, especially in your 1g..It's not hard, just take pictures of how stuff goes before you start messing with it,if a turbo swap is new to you..

Being behind the couch made me laugh, bud. :p

The turbos are really hit and miss, but I'd never recommend relying on something with hit or miss feedback. You might be able to put down just as good numbers with an ebay 16g as you would an MHI16g...or it might detonate the first time you hit 5psi. Really it's just chance and design with that specific turbo, but why bank on chance? That's just my personal outlook.

I love ebay..But we can now get rebuilt real turbos for about the same price as an ebay one..And there soo pretty before you put them in..

Hit or miss stuff I hate..But lets just put you and me together thats .04 cents..Thats almost as much as If I had a nickel saying..

Its it literally behind my couch..I'm a hoarder of dsm parts..LOL..I need to get that shipped out to Justin,Its sitting here doing no good.

Yea it is just adjustable (kind of like a universal thing). Shortening it would just make it hold "tighter". My friend has a boosted RSX put washers inbetween the turbo and the wastegate to achieve the same effect. Other than holding a tight 10 or being blow open sooner to slack in the rod, it doesn't control boost.
