Bolt starting to shear. Can it be saved?

I'm trying to remove the 5 bolts off the transfer case. 4 of them came off pretty easy. Last bolt, it starts to turn. But after half a turn, it doesn't get easier. I try another quarter turn and it feels like the bolt is going to break off.

Can the bolt still be saved or should I just break it, Silde the tcase off (down the length of the bolt) and extract the exposed bolt with vicegrips.

This is the loooong bolt in the front. I don't know if I have enough room to slide the tcase over that much either

the bolt may not have the washer on it. i have some extra tcase bolts. and some of them are missing washers.

Try un-bolting it as much as you can, Then getting some grease or penetrating fluid on the exposed threads and screwing it back in so as to coat the bolt hole. Do this a couple of time see if it helps.

The transfer case bolt is about 5" long. The first 1" is thread and the rest of the bolt is unthreaded. I've been trying the screw-in, screw-out method but I doubt that pb blaster is gonna reach all the way down to the thread.

Do you think using an impact wrench will help, or make it shear off faster? LOL. Its coming off one way or another tomorrow

The steel bolt threads are probably galling in the aluminum transmission case threads. The bolt may break, but I doubt it. I do see a helicoil in your future.

If it's gonna break, it's gonna break.
once it's weak it's junk, just let it break off.
Pull the transfer case, and drill the bolt if you have to.
I hate to say that, but it seems it's too late for that one.

Ya, thats what I'm thinking too.

I gotta take off the entire exhaust now to make room for the tcase. Previous owner installed a 1 piece 3" turboback exhaust.

Haha, I wish that was all I had to deal with. I have been working on my talon all spring break about 12 hours a day and have been wrenching on it whenever I had time during this week as well. I test fit my ETS intercooler kit today, and the pipe that goes from my GM Maf and my intercooler isn't even close to being long enough. Lame.

I also broke a bolt off on the oil return of the turbo. Had to drill that one out.
