Alright I'm new to the turbo scene but I have been smoking out the back the car has been boosting up like crap and I took the piping off of the front of the turbo and only one of the little fan blades is bent, excuse my ignorance and yes I know that turbo is probably no good but is just that little detail big enough to give me so many problems?

Check for shaft play in the turbo..Wiggle it up and down..If the wheel touches the housing its blown...If the turbo whines and doens't boost worth a crap it's blown..And smoke is also a key sign something is wrong..

If you open up your hood and have your car idle and you rev it up a bit and you see some smoke coming out, the turbo seals are blown and burning oil. You'd also be seeing smoke coming out of the exhaust.

Not much wiggle room, but when I spin the turbine with my hand it is definitely rubbing on the housing, so I'll assume its blown as of now. Its just a stock turbo, these carry t25 or something like that right? Do you suggest rebuild or new turbo?

Stellar advice- such great way to pinpoint oil consumption. :applause:

How much smoke? Plenty or just enough to notice.

Assuming your profile is correct...Either go with a rebuild or a 14b...The 14b requires a little modification but it a great stock upgrade to the garrett t25..

A rebuild isn't worth the T-25. I'd either buy a used one, a 14B/16G or if you were inclined maybe a T-28 and it will be a bolt in affair if your wanting to do a bit of an upgrade while maintaining a stock appearance/wanting a non complicated install.

A friend just offered a 14b out of his talon for free, what kinds of modifications am I going to need for this?

You'll need an install kit or to make your own.

It's going to consist of a J-pipe and an oil feed line mainly (I use a stock 1G one from the head) . You can modify your 2G drain by reaming the holes a touch. I'd recommend new gaskets too.

This is the Vfaq for a 16g but the 14B is an identical install. 16G install in a 2G

Many of the supporting vendors on this site will have an install kit too. Here is one from FP Forced Performance Turbochargers: FP 16G Install Kit for 2G DSM. Extreme PSI, RRE etc all make them too.

Alright well thanks for all the info guys, I guess I better get to it, I'll also be doing the compression test today.

Remember coolant, and crush washers...And a bit of oil...Ahh mise well do oil change while your at it..

I always forget crush washers..

oh yeah I was gonna do oil, I live in arizona and it gets hot here even in the winter 20-50? I don't have money for synthetic right now, and is autozone oil filter okay?

Oh the coolant... thanks for the reminder of this bud haha.

Pinch of the inlet/outlet hoses of the turbo lines and you won't need to drain any, and if you don't pinch them off it's a coolant apocalypse when you take the return line off regardless if you drain as much as you can out of the rad. I've gotten owned by it a couple times. While your in there I recommend replacing the soft lines too as they are probably getting pretty old.

To do this on mine I got a friend to put his finger over the outlet right after I pulled it off (Keeping it pinched so it doesn't leak from the other end) and then slipped the new one on as soon as he moved his finger and then wash rinse and repeat for the other one.

Another thing to keep in mind is you'll need to slightly bend your hard coolant lines off the turbo to make them work with the 14b. Stick a screwdriver in it when they are attached to the turbo and pull to do this. It's easier to see where they go if you attach the turbo to the car by a couple bolts loosely.
