So i just bought back my old 91 TSI awd.The previous owner gave up after 5000 km of hard use and the arrival of lot's of blue smoke.Testing shows perfect compression on all four, lot's of shaft play, but only smokes after five minutes of running. There is little to no oil in the charge pipe itself but my theory is that the oil is leaking in the turbine side and burning up after the five minutes of running causing the smoke.Since the turbo is shot anyway's i was thinking of just removing the oil feed to see if the smoke would stop.Any thought's, suggestions, would be appreciated.

DO NOT DO THAT...
your correct with the turbo being bad. My 16g had a bad oil seal on the hot side and it would smoke viagarantly. If you have as much shaft play as im assuming from your post, its exactly what is going down.

disco that oil feed line and youll see a turbo seize....if your lucky maybe itll even blow apart and make it through the intercooler and end up as a pretty little impression in one of your cyclinders ha

The car will still run with the charge pipe off the turbo and the turbo does'nt spin anyways.

Sounds like you need a new turbo. Or you can have yours rebuilt. Also check to make sure your Oil return tube is clear and NOT clogged up.

Remove the wastegate arm from the flapper lever. The car will still smoke, but the turbo will not be able to build boost. You may be able to save yourself from replacing the wheels if it hasn't mangled them already.

The car builds zero boost right now.I'm starting to think the turbo shaft snapped because you can hear something spinning but the compresser wheel does not move.Well the weekend is here so i'll find out for sure. The old chinese 16g can go in the scrap metal pile.

You'd actually be doing it a favor by doing so. I'd rather see you blow it up using heavy explosives. Maybe some of the pieces will end up back in China where they belong.

I wonder if the Chinese acutally use the garbage items that they build, or if they only sell them on eBay and to WalMart.

Well I finally got around to removing the turbo. Has anyone ever swapped hot sides, compressor wheels, or compressor housings from this type of turbo to a 14b?

Ahhhh the early Evo III GT's from Turbochargers.com. Those things broke turbine shafts like they were 6mm bolts. I've seen at least 6 come through my shop that look just like yours.

If you were the one that bought that turbo and it wasn't very old, you should get in touch with Turbochargers.com. I believe they're covered under a very forgiving warranty.

If it ends up being scrap, at the very least you have a nice 7cm2 turbine housing and a stronger wastegate actuator to use on your 14B!

So you seem to think the turbine housing will work,I was'nt sure beacause there are a few different types of the knockoff 16g.I'll try it tonight. Thanks

That's not the eBay junk that uses questionable wheel sizes and internal part sizes.

Every part of the GT Concepts turbos are interchangeable with MHI parts, and they can be fully rebuilt with a MHI kit.
