What exactly is a blow thru set up and what do you need to have one?? Ive heard alot about them, but didnt know what they do, or how they work, or what you need to have one.
 
its a GM MafT setup. u need a translator and a GM Maf, then u have a blow thru system, search u can find a lot more things about it :thumb:
 
Well, you still have to put those items in the right place. In your standard turbo setup, the MAF is in your air filter canister, and the air is metered before it is sucked into the turbo. That means ALL of the air that goes through the turbo is expected, by the ECU, to be fed into the engine. It will supply fuel for that amount of air. Your blow-off valve is after your intercooler in the air piping, so if the blow-off valve releases some air it must be fed back into the intake so it will still make it into the engine. If you vent that air from the blow off valve to atmosphere, the engine will never get it but the ECU will still supply fuel for that amount of air, causing you to run rich. A blow through setup eliminates that problem. Basically, you take the MAF and put it in a new location...after the blow off valve in your intake piping. So now you have a setup where air flows into your engine like this, in this order:

Air Filter & intake pipe
Turbo
Intercooler
blow-off valve
MAF

So now, you can vent your blow-off valve to atmosphere, because the vented air has not been metered. The ECU never saw that air, and will not add fuel for it. So the running rich problem of venting your blow-off valve to atmosphere is eliminated. You can also use a 3" GM MAF in this setup, which has low restriction and better airflow for large turbos. So, does that explain it? I bought the pieces for my setup from Dejon Tool.
 
it does explain it pretty good. is the only benefit being able to vent to the atmosphere? and the only benefit of being able to vent is the sound? im jw
 
i believe it also has adjustments to compensate for larger injectors and slight tuning. Ive never messed with one.
 
Venting to the atmosphere is not the sole reason people use the MAF and translator. Just being able to vent is a side benefit intended to satisfy their inner ricer (I should know, my inner ricer is satisfied every time I let off the throttle an hear the BOV open up). GM MAF's are much less of a restriction to the intake than the 1g and 2g maf (though many tuners have no problem reaching 400 hp with the 2g maf). Additionally, the translator is it's own tuning device and with a logger, you can tune your engine as well as any piggyback afc. You also have the added benefit of not being crippled if an intercooler pipe blows off. With the mas in it's stock location, a blown pipe will stall your engine because it's not seeing any air come in, at least with the blow-thru setup, you can limp to the nearest rest area and check your pipes.
 
so if you already have logger and use an afc to tune, the benefit gained is more airflow. and the current pocketlogger would be of no use and the afc retuned?
