Block-off plate for TB?

Why shouldn't I just block all of it?
Am I asking for idle surge on cold days?

(I saw this post, the rest were EGR related)

I don't have power steering, A/C, etc.
Thermostat housing would need to be modified...
It seems like I should be able to make a block-off plate,
attach it to the underside of the TB with short screws and call it a day.
(I would not use the bottom half)

What do you think?

I'm in the same boat as you. From the research I have done, blocking off the FIAV will have no ill effects besides your idle until the car is warmed up. From my understanding, you can remove the ISC also but the car will not start or have trouble starting in cold weather. I'm not exactly sure how cold though, anyone know? I want to remove the whole bottom part of the throttle body and block it off like the original poster stated. Anyone with personal experience with this can you chime in and let us know what the affects are? It is possible for me to keep the ISC, but I would like to just remove it. Besides having trouble starting in cold weather, is there any other effects?

Sealing the FIAV is fine down to -10 deg f or so, after that the ISC passage isn't large enough and you will have to crack the throttle a touch to get it to keep running.

Trust me on this removing the ISC is a crappy solution. The computer expects to be able to set idle speed during warm up and uses the ISC for many more things than just simple idle. While I will agree it is possible to make it run without it, remember back to the days when turning on your headlights changed your idle speed?? Maybe I'm getting old... but I like the engine to adjust for conditions and I can concentrate on driving, not wondering if / when the engine is going to die because the idle is too slow. Good luck with your mod, I can make a few of these if there is interest, but is a super simple piece, just need a 1/4 inch pipe tap and a drill. Good Luck guys!!

I do this to many cars, make you plate from 3/16 or thicker material so you can thread 2 1/4 pipe fittings into it, one over each side of the idle passages. Then make a short loop of tubing between these. Now you have your idle control without all that junk hanging off the TB. I don't have pics, but if someone really can't figure this out I'll take some of the next car I do (should be this weekend). If you could, pictures would help. I'm sure I could figure it out, but pictures are so much easier. I'm sorta confused as to what you said, are you saying to not remove the ISC or that you can but you have to do this mod to the block off plate? I'm in the process of building a motor and tons of other upgrades, Ill be starting a thread soon on my progress. Thanks for your help.

I just picked up a bored out 2g TB from Steve, its the 98-99 model with only 2 vacuum ports so it will bolt right up like factory. The TB looks great & should help out with the top end restriction from the puny 55mm factory TB :thumb: . The polished throttle plate looks to good to be hidden in the intake :cool: :D

I would do the same but I'm doing a 6bolt swap as we speak so I'm sending him a 1g tb. Let me know how you like it.
 
Suppose I could care less about idle surge. (Why not remove the ISC?) My official question is: "will blocking the entire lower portion of my TB render the vehicle inoperable?"
