So over the past few weeks i've dropped my tranny out, pulled my motor, mounted it on a stand and taken off my timing belt/head. My plans were to take the complete short block to my local machine shop to have it dissembled, the block decked/honed/hot tanked/bored to .020 for oversized stock pistons. Have the crank hot tanked/measured/polished, have the block washed, clean the rods, and to install new plugs/bearings/dowels. Install the new rings and reassemble block.

I'm looking to cut down on the machine shop cost a bit because I have a pretty limited budget (only planning to change timing belt/tensioner/head gasket and doing all the bottom end gaskets)

So I wanted to dissemble/assemble (put the crank/rods/pistons) the block myself and i'm looking for a couple more good guides to help me along with the process since its only my first time and I don't have any help doing this. Also lmk if theres anything missing or any suggestions in my build as this is all i Plan to do.. think I have everything covered.

Thanks guys

My first time I torn down my 4g63 was not bad at all. I did the same thing you are doing now. I have a Mitsu service manual, so that greatly helped with the reassembly. But a chiltons manual should help a great deal as well. Disassembly should almost require no instructions. The best advice I could give is to get alot of ziploc bags and a sharpie, and keep track of every single bolt/nut. If you have any specific questions on the tear down and rebuild, just ask. I've done a few now, and would be glad to help!

Taking the engine apart is cake, putting it back together is the more difficult part. Like mentioned above, keep track of every little thing LOL. I was going to use a six bolt when i built mine, and so i disregarded my 7 bolt stuff.. long story short I ended up using my 7 bolt stuff, and finding all the bolts and what not was the absolut biggest pain in the ass ever, and I never want to have to do that again LOL.

Theres enough diagrams/pics/info between a service manual, and online that finding where things go shouldn't be a probem. But again.... KEEP TRACK OF THE DAMN NUTS AND BOLTS LOL

Make sure your machine shop at the very least hones your block out to each according piston...

Don't turn the crank, its nitrated and turning eliminates this making the crank weak...

Have the assembly balanced including your new flywheel or dampner if you are buying new ones...

Cool alright. I failed to mention i've been using the mitsu service manual and the Haynes manual (more so the haynes) for everything up until now.. guess just the stuff in the block has me a little intimidated to take apart LOL

Use a digital camara.Label everything. take lots of notes.Take your time.If the crank needs to be cut have it turned.By cutting the crank you are not going to weaken it.The nitrating only penatrates the crank about 20 thousands. If the crank is bent or has bad journals that will cause you more problems than anything else.
