Black smoke while shifting

Basically what the title says....my dad was behind me today, and said whenever i shifted, black smoke would come out. I'm not sure if i was on boost or not, he wasn't clear on when it happened, but i believe i was a little. What could my problem be, i was thinking a boost leak, he was thinking a blown turbo .

That happens if you have a BOV vented to atmosphere. Otherwise I would guess valve guides are on their way out. There's always a million possibilities though.

What hose could have fallen off to make me vent. I know i am not purposely venting, but just to check that. I'll have someone look tomorrow while i drive w/o boost, and with boost.

There is a hose that runs from your exhaust manifold/turbo area back to the intake. It should be pretty obvious. If it's not connected that could cause the problem. Any loose hoses are usually a bad thing....

If you need a picture I could take one, but you should be able to find the right hose pretty easily.

Don't you mean "a hose that runs from your BOV back to the intake..."? He's not venting to atmosphere from the exhaust manifold...that would be an exhaust leak.

Thanks guys, to bad the hose is exactly where its supposed to be. Any other ideas. I did have a vaccum leak, where the ventcase ventilation hose goes to right after the MAFS. I plugged that up tonite too, i'll check everything tomorrow, hopefully my dad just mistaked me shifting to a brief WOT moment.

Sorry, I'm pretty exhausted and worn out and I'm new to DSM's. (had a couple mitsu turbos in the past) I had a feeling I was going to say something stupid if I tried to tackle anything technical right now.



Anyway, it's easy enough to track from your intake. I kind of doubt that's your problem though. Obviously worth checking the simple stuff though.

I don't have a boost tester yet, i have a garage full of brand new tools, but no boost tester(go figure), i have no money either, so.....would a boost leak cause this though?

It's just because you are running rich...thats how it is from the factory.

Boost leak tester costs $5 to make and yes, boost leak will make you run rich.

ok, just to let every one know, i had a friend follow me today, and my car only blows black smoke, when shifting, and when using boost. If the boost leak test comes up empty, what do i check next?

I'm fairly certain that it won't but if it does, and you're 100% certain it's black smoke, I would get a logger and find out exactly what's going on.
