Black plastic by motor

Hey! I'm thinking about changing valve cover soon since its leaking and I nticed this black peice on the left hand side of the motor.. It has some white foam around it somewhat.. What is this peice?...

Its the half moon gasket, it comes as part of the vc gasket kit.

That is a "half moon" type gasket. The 'foam' is probably a silicon type sealer, used to help keep it from leaking. If you buy a new valve cover gasket kit it should come with the half moon.

Glad to hear its not another Hack job the previous owner did.. As for the white foam? A sealant that he used?

I use a thin layer of black rtv on it personally. Yes it is a type of sealant he used.

Search: rtv | RTV Adhesive | AutoZone.com Used to help create a seal. Not much is needed, just a small bead on the sharp corners and around the half moon.

Was the half moon even necessary for the valve cover? Or could they just of put a flat spot there?

Never thought about it. I can take a guess and say it's a provision for a cam position sensor on other 4g6x cars??

How do you think the cam bores were made? If that area wasn't cut out, they couldn't bore the head. It was a machining operation.

if you don't like the rubber peice there, the evos run a metal one, might seal a little better or look a little better. Evo Half moon gasket

I believe the part even for the DSMs is now changed over to the metal half moon. At least that's my vague recollection from two years ago.

Didn't know that, been awhile since I bought a gasket set.

Evo metal half moon gasket FTW. My rubber one always used to slightly leak. Never had an issue after I switched.
