So I've been doing some research on eprom chips. This is for my 91 1G talon. Im getting into tuning and burning my own chips. Definitely not on my own! I have a mentor helping me along the way... So to the questions.

By experience or knowledge....

What is the best eprom chip to buy? I'm looking for one that you can reprogram and not the ones you use once and throw away. Also, what is the best chip programmer out there as far as the bang for the buck? Here's what I've come up with below. Any thoughts?

-SST 27SF512
-27C256

Im not sure of the differences and the compatibilty for our ecu's. Any insight would be great.

Thanks

Moates burn 2 to burn and use a sst 27sf128. Also stock bin is only 32kbytes so no need for a 512 chip

Is that chip number incorrect? I couldnt find a place that sells them. Thanks for the input!

No:( my bad the 27sf256. Also look into the ostrich 2.0 by Moates. I went the same route as you but then got the ostrich as it was much better and I could real time tune

Also as you are getting into the ecu code there are a couple other sites that have great info if you would like it

Ok thanks!!

About the burn2 vs the Ostrich... I'm ot sure what to lean towards. Does ostrich burn the tune as well as being able to datalog? I've been reading up on it. It's somewhat confusing as to what the Ostrich is capable of doing/supposed to be used for.

The ostrich simulates a eprom chip. You can't data log from it you still need a cable for that. There is no need to remove the ostrich to burn a new file to it. It can be done in real time with engine running so ## abl to see ## results immediately

Ostrich gets my vote as well. Change the tune, upload it, and the changes are immediate. Real time tuning is a must imo. Those burners are ancient tech, didnt cavemen tune with chip burners? haha

Plus for as cheap as ostrich is, why not? Tunerpro or Jackal can be used then and both are very capable.

So with a reprogrammable chip, I can datalog, change the tune on the fly, and then save the data to the chip? All with ostrich.

Change the tune on the fly, and then save the data to the chip, yes.

Datalog, no. You will need a $30 logging cable since we log through the od1 under the dash.

Some of the software you can use, like Jackal, has a built logger. So you can log, tune, and flash with the same program. All real time.

Only $20 if you want to check it out.

Don't feel like you have to choose between an ostrich, burner, 27c256, or 27sf517. Yes, I use the 512kb chip. I use it set up as a flip chip. Set up a switch to one pin on the eprom and it will switch between bins. I use a single 27sf512 and a USB Topwin burner to make all the tunes in my van. Real handy when you have a good base map. I make small chamges and switch back and forth. When I get to work, I burn a new set of bins based on how the old ones felt.

The 27c256 chips are good for giving to your friends or putting in place for when you need the ostrich out of the car. They cheap, erase cheaply, you'll find a 27c256 hiddem in just about every room in my house

The ostrich is the kind of tool you keep for your whole life, like an innovate wideband. It doesn't get sold with the car, and it will make you wonder how you lived without it. When you use.another tuning system that requires you to cycle the key every time a chamge is made, you'll want to rip it out and put in something that can take an ostrich.

Don't choose, all of them combined with the logger cable is less than link lite.

Nice! So ostrich, erasable chip and burner, datalogging cable, and some type of tuning software to connect with the ostrich. Has anybody tried werewolf? I'm interested in their software, but I'd like to hear some input from someone who uses it.

WW is very capeable speed density only software. There is a group of people doing all DIY speed density through tunerpro as well. That is all free, but the low cost and quickness of setting up WW is very nice. When I was ising the free version of jackal it worked really well. Because I tune so many other cars with tunerpro, it only makes semse fpr me to use it on my DSM.

Get as much input as you can, and see if you can find write ups and videos on how to do it. Recently started learning about flashable ecus in evos and stis, there is so much useful information i'm surprised every evo and wrx/sti isn't tuned.

Well the ostrich sort of is the erasable chip and burner. Its like a chip with a ribbon cable attached to it. You would just need ostrich and your choice of Tunerpro/Jackal/WW.

Havent used it, but its basically like an updated new version of Jackal with a bunch of new goodies. The map tracing feature is pretty amazing. I still run Jackal, ran it on three cars now. Its just too easy, i dont want to upgrade LOL.

Well I've made my decision. I'm going with ostrich and WW. I'm located pretty close to hakcenter, the man who developed jackel and WW. Definitely a solid build in the making. I'll keep everyone posted
