I have read about 10000 cases of the belt sqeeking but none really apply to my case. My belt sqeeks when i start my car up and when i drive. When my headligts are on and my heater it seems to be the worse the lights dimm when it sqeels but when it stop the brighten back up, also my volt guage tells me i'm loseing power. I have broken 4 belts now, so i bring it to another shop. I just boguht a timing belt kit that has everything including a newwaer pump and new belts but when he goes to change them it says that the timing bekt was replaced in 05 and the water pump looks new. He said the a bracket looked like it was bent? The bracket that holds the alternator so he trys to bend it back but the sqeeking is still their he seems tot hink he didn't benid it enough. Could he be correct has anyone ran into this problem? Or could it possibly be my alternator? how do i check my alternator?

i had a problem on my 1g with belts snapping and squeeking bad, and it turned out to be my crank pulley was slipping and tearing the belt up, also the lights dimming and voltage dropping is the fact the belt is slipping and not charging like it should, have you tried the simple, tightening until it stopped, our cars have been known for belt squeek and i have to tighten mine every so often, but to the bent mount..it could be that. If the mount is bent the alternator could be sitting wrong causeing the belt to tear/squeek/slip. Hope i helped

chris,

I had the same prob and in the end it turned out to be 3 things.

1. the altenator bracket was bent..from the belt being over tightened

2. the altenator bearings were shot..because of prob #1.

3. The crank pulley was shot even though we marked it and there was no visible wobble

replace the crank pulley $100.00...I got mine from slowboy

while you're doin that have the altenator checked to make sure the bearings are still good. and If the bracket is bent replace it.

i had a similar problem when i bought my car, the kid i bought it from said it was the throw out bearing....i couldnt help but laugh. i replaced all the belts and never heard another squeek.

but as the others said check all the pully's for wobble, i had a 420A that would eat belts, turns out it was a warped crank pully.

good luck!

well i know it's not the water pump because it's new in 05, it's not because of the belts being toloose because all 5 of them was tight at one point. so its either the alt, the crank pulley or the alt bracket needs to be bent more...

its the alt. its always the alt. I have that same problem just go to your local junk yard even and pick one up and replace it im 95% sure thats what it is :)
