Bell housing crack [Merged 2-9]

I think theres 3 into the block(2 up top and 1 in front) and 1 into the housing underneath by the tcase.

Allright all the bolts appear to be tight. But when i press ion the clutch the whole tranny andbell housing shifts towards the passenger side, but the block remains still I cant really determine where the stress is coming from?

Dude the exact same thing just happened to my block. have you fixed it yet and if so what exactly did you do. Didnt know if the welds would be strong enough to handle the torque of the 2600. please get back to me quickly.

This happened to me a couple of years ago. I never tried welding it, which could work, but it will never be as strong as it was stock. The gusset bracket your mechanic suggests is a pretty good idea, together with the weld it should be enough to hold. My 'solution' to the problem was to buy a different short block, rebuild it, and swap it in.

Before I fixed it, I got by for a while by drilling a hole through both sides of the front motor mount and running a bolt all the way from the trans to the far side of the motormount. That was probably the most ghetto fix ever.

I bet the little 12mm block to bellhousing bolt by the starter is also broken/missing.

The stress is coming from your foot on the clutch pedal I have found that it is very important that you get the rear lower bolt in. If it isnt in tight and not stripped it can make all the other bolts back out. Also driving around with loose tranny bolts can weaken the bellhousing and make micro cracks in the metal. an ACT2600 dont help matters

I had the sme problem with my 92 awd. It turned out that the front belhousing bolt boss had broken and was letting the bolts come loose and the only bolts that were holding the tranny on were the top two. This was letting the tranny seperate, and when you would push in the clutch, the transfer case would rub on the fly wheel and not let the clutch disengage corectly.

You will first have to take the tranny off to do it correctly. then, as long as you still have the ear that broke off, youll have to clean up the block and the ear. Then weld it back on with nickle rod. Do you have any welding experience or no some one that does?
This is not really a job for some one without experience. That and you dont want to wire feed weld it with regular shielded or flux cored mild steel. The weld to the cast that your block is made of will not last unless you use the nickle. Do a search on "how to weld cast" on your search engine, it will show you all you should need to know.

sometimes if you tightent the bolts in a stupid order you can or if you tighten them while something is in the way

or a shat ton of wheelhop possibly i dunno, could you explain the situation of the car that has a cracked bell housing, and how big/where the crack is?

How do you crack a bellhousing?

by having an alignment pin back out of your 10 month old aluminum (clutchmasters) flywheel (and act 2100) between shifts (5500 shift point)! destoyed bellhousing and everything inside. pin got jammed between flywheel and housing, cut a good 3/8 deep groove (2 total) and solid/visible cracks from outside all but about 6-8 inches split (i will never do another aluminum flywheel on a street car).

Im in the same hole that you are. You can get the ear welded back on with a arch welder but you need nickle rods wich are about 15 bucks a piece i heard.
i was taking mine apart after the guy who owned it before me broke the ear off in cracked the housing in found that the clutch disk looked like it had been threw a salad shooter.

Like Defiant said, the bolts that hold the tranny to the engine probably came loose or are gone altogether. That's why your clutch felt like mush. When you pushed the pedal it jacked the bellhouising away from the engine as it tried to release the clutch and snapped off that mounting boss. Same thing happened to me. It can be fixed by welding but take it to someone who is reputable so it gets done right.

It needs to be "Heli-arc-ed"... If you know of any marine (boating) shops around ask them who welds their cracked lower units.. They will know.. I have welded a few... Anybody they send a new $12K outboard to when the owner smacks a rock will be good enough.. Cast aluminum can be tricky.... Anyone who does these repairs will make it strong and look flawless...

The bell housing is a separate piece of the tranny case and contains no fluid. Just have a tranny shop weld it making sure they first "stress relieve" the crack (i.e. drill a hole on each end so it does not open up more)
