Ok 1995 Talon TSI AWD, need to pull engine to do rering and replace crank and all bearings, looking at what the best way to pull the engine in a VERY small 1car garage is, I don't have room to get to pass. side to pull axle from trans. trying to see what the most recommended way to pull engine is in this case as I don't have room and car is on 4 jack stands right now with everything unhooked from engine other then AC unit, I have all the electrical unhooked turbo pulled and power steering unit unhooked from engine, just have mounts left and trans is still bolted up.:banghead:

its not a good idea to unbolt the tranny with nothing to suport it with the axles in. i dont see how you dont have room to pull the axle tho. you need like 4 inches to remove it and you have that much when you take the tire off.

The easiest way would be to pull trans out from the bottom. Then if you can't get a lift for some reason. Get a few friends that can lift alittle weight and pull the motor out. Also taking your hood off will give you more light and room.

+1 I would go that route. You really dont need much room to pull axles out. Just remove tires, unbolt fork, use pry bar to pop off of trans. no need to even remove king nut.

there is just too much crap along the walls and I have a full size Mechanics tool box along the back wall as I am a mechanic, I would rather do this with lifts and in a real shop but don't have access to that so I am trying to make do, I thought I saw somewhere that there was a way to take the engine out with out screwing with the transmission? or is it really a bad idea in this case to try that? someone else said if I was just putting in a new crank and a rering that it would be easier to just leave engine in car and strip it down and just pull engine from trans enough to get crank out? I am just trying to see what the best way to go about this is. I am used to working on GM engines, but I do know my way around the 4g63t cars just never pulled one out yet LOL:ohdamn: I am loading pics of the room I am working with also

Can you turn the car around so the front is facing the garage door? Might give you more wiggle room. I did exactly what Chrisgarza said in his post for my engine pull and I have limited space like yourself.

That's plenty of room to proceed with the method above. You can do all of this from underneath the car if you need to. :thumb:

Clean out your garage so you have more room, stop complaining about it and pull the motor man, dont mean to sound like a dick but we have all pulled motors and worked on cars in tight spaces. I pulled my motor axles and etc before in a large car trailer.

Take everything off the front of the engine. A/c, ps, alt, harmonic balancer timing belt. Then remove the head just leaving the short block then get some friends and remove the block by hand.

Only way to remove the engine without removing everything up front is if you have an auto. Can't do that with a clutch.

clean garage, leave only what you need (tools) a few
put some tires on the car turn it around,
start taking transmission and engine off
there is no way your getting that crank out of there if you don't take the clutch off
good luck!

How is the weather there? If I were you I would push the car outside and attempt the engine pull outside of the garage due to your limited space. When I pulled my engine I removed the engine and trans together which seemed simpler because I didnt have a lift.

Spend 40 a month on small storage unit to clean out and store all the stuff you dont need in your garage to gain side access. That what I did only it was to clean out the 10x20 my car is in to put it back together. Like others said where there a will there is a way.
