Couple days ago my headlights went out (my dash lights got real bright then a big purple flash on the left headlight sparked and they both went out) Got up the next day and popped my hood while the car was on and notice my battery was shooting out acid and the positive post was smoking.

Drove it to Autozone and had it check, told me the battery was giving out 17v while the car was running. On the way home my fog lights blew out as well. Parked the car and the next day it didnt start. I turn the key and it just clicks once.

This a alternator problem or what? Going to put a new battery in there today to see if it will start...

14v is a good battery. 12v to 13v is good when the car is running. 17v??? That's crazy, return it.

Sounds like your alternator's internal voltage regulator has lost it's mind.

Do not continue to drive the car, as other, much more expensive systems will be damaged by the overvoltage.

Get a quality replacement alternator from a reputable source, or have your's rebuilt locally.

I repeat, do not drive your car again untill you have addressed this issue

This happened to me too.... my gauge lights were like as bright as the sun and it completely melted my alternator fuse (yet it didn't blow... wtf...) Luckily mine only lasted for about 30 seconds before the alternator gave out.

Like the guy above me said, DO NOT DRIVE IT. You could easily set something on fire, fry an ECU, etc etc etc. If you absolutely HAVE to drive it a couple miles, unhook the alternator. I made it 80 miles once (at night, with all lights on) on battery power alone.

Yep, the alternator took a crap. Replace the alternator. I would get a battery too if you can. Charging it at 17V probably cooked the battery. You will by lucky if that is all that you have to replace. Sounds like the battery took the brunt of the impact, it could easily have taken out any and all of the electronics in the car.

Another vote for the alternator. Mine was overcharging, boiling the battery, and making the dash lights and gauges go haywire. Don't use anything but a genuine Mitsu alternator or you'll be replacing it again pretty soon.

Do not continue to drive the car.

It is the alternator. I hope that it didn't toast anything else.

I would fully inspect your wiring harness, power and ground wires for the alternator and battery, and the wire connections in your engine bay fuse box.

If you are having problems after replacing the battery and alternator, you should check out your ECU to make sure you didn't fry it.

Good luck,
