I just picked up my first DSM yesterday. Its a 92 gsx 5 speed. I drove it around for a while, and noticed a really bad smell. I popped the hood and the battery was hissing and bubbling and seeping out acid. So i replaced the battery with a new one. And this one is starting to do the same thing, just not as bad yet. I checked the voltage, and the highest it would read is 15.5.

I also have a really bad belt squeal on cold start ups. I think these two problems may be related? Has anyone else experienced these problems?

I have a bad squeel on cold starts too, I think its my power steering pump bearings.
I think 15.5 volts is too high. A 12v system is best designed to work at 14.5v. I believe that your alternators internal voltage reglutator may be shot. DSM alternators have a built in regulator that is not swappable, so try a new alternator.
