ball bearing shaft play

There is no tolerant level, shaft play should even happen, but if it does them the turbo bearing need to be repaired along with the turbine wheel.

Why would the turbine wheel and bearing assembly require replacement on a new turbocharger?



Generally, a new ball bearing turbo will have a *slight* amount of up/down play as well as a tiny bit of in/out play due to their thrust plate design. The thrust collar sits on the shaft a bit differently on these turbos so it does not load the ball bearings with any inward or outward pressure. This would damage the bearings almost immediately. On a journal bearing turbo, the shaft can slide freely in and out of the journal bearings, so thrust alignment can be perfected because it doesn't load the support bearings in any way.

A ball-bearing turbo's bearing assembly is pressed onto the shaft and into the housing so there is no movement between the bearing assembly and the shaft or the bearing assembly and the housing. Any movement at all is the responsibility of the bearings themselves. As long as the wheels cannot touch the housings, you're :thumb:.

When I got my 3052 I was a little surprised with the amount of side to side & in/out play it had. I was expecting basically non based on the info I had read on the net. Well, it turns out not all the info on the net is true (ya, surprised me too! ROFL ). Like mentioned the Garret turbos do actualy have some good side to side play & even in/out while new & this is perfectly normal. Now I do know some other BB turbo's on the market don't have the play the Garretts come with.
