Balance shaft belt broken!!!!!

My friends GST last friday didnt wanted to start. We removed the timing belt covers and notice that the balance shaft belt was broken and the crank angle sensor. We replace the sensor and the belt and the car finaly started. Looked like the belt was broken long before. What does that mean? a sign of crankwalk? or what?

I would think you should be fine...the belt probably just took out the CAS. If that belt came off awhile ago, you would feel some pretty bad engine vibrations as the BS in the oil pump would be spinning and the front one would not. If it did come off awhile ago, it might have just now started to rub against the sensor. What part looked broken on the CAS? Your lucky it didn't get tied up in the timing belt...then you'd really be in trouble.

You should check your timing belt and tensioner, also. Did you replace the balance belt tensioner? How about the water pump? How many miles are on the car? While you're at it, you might want to consider the crank pulley,aka harmonic balancer, also.

the water pump oil pump and timing belt only has about 10k miles. My friend in the tune up never changed the belt and the tensoner of the balance shaft
