i recently was hearing this knocking sound from my engine..along with heavy vibration. There was no metal shavings in oil pan. Car had full 18-19 inches of vacuum. I thought it was a spun rod bearing. I went to remove the timing cover and I found the balance shaft belt sitting there all broken. Thinking my timing may have slipped I aligned all marks and they lined up fine. I'm guess the knocking sound was coming from balance shaft just spinning freely inside of motor. Coul anything have gotten damaged ...all timing marks were still on. If i had a bent valve it wouldn't be hold 18-19 inches of vacuum at idle? Could I just leave balance shaft belt off w/o removing balance shafts??

Luckily your fine, stay on top of changing your belts or you wont allways be so lucky. Don't drive it anymore until you've changed both, and make sure everything is cleaned up ok. Get a clymers manual, follow it.

I found out what the problem was with my car breaking balace shaft belts and brand new clutch slipping. My flywheel is shimming back and forth. There's only 5 bolt holes and dowel pin was missing on crank. I can take my hand and move it side to side rotations and in and out a alot. One of the bolts were broken off in crank and the others were cross threaded and I guess they didn't hold too well...which in turn gave me my slipping clutch symptoms w act 2600. And the rod knock noise came from it being loose and when I hold it while turning the crankshaft the nose is gone. So I have so 3 options....remove flywheel and rethread or retapp broken bolt holes. Drop oil pan and reinstall new crank w rod and main bearings ..or just get a new motor? Tell me what you guys think
