Bad Temp Sensor? Overheats during start up...

I recently bought a stock running 1g and decided to pull the motor to work on some maintenance. I replaced all the gaskets/seals including the Headgasket, added ARP Headstuds, Water pump, etc, etc...

When i finally started it up the temp gauge seems to warm up pretty quick and within 2-3 minutes im at operating temp. I drove it around the block and it seems to get hot pretty quick, even with the heater on it still gets hot.

Im not loosing any coolant, don’t see any smoke out the tailpipe, and the fans are both working. I do however get a flashing CEL that comes and goes but I don’t have a 1g logger to check it out…

Any ideas
 
For some reason these 1g's can get hot really fast..Idk if it's the same for 2g's, but I can go from one set of stoplights(cold). And end up at the next stoplight and be blowing hot air like I've been driving for 20 min..

Have you felt the upper and lower coolant hoses to make sure the thermostat is opening when hot?

I had a problem like this like 2 years ago. Went through a butt load of thermostats before one finally opened..
 
Yea the upper hose was cool/warm, wasnt burning hot or anything...

Im thinking that the $17 Fail-Safe thermostat is a bust :notgood:...

But would a stuck thermostat cause the car to warm up quickly, im talking a cold start up in the morning??
 
You didn't answer my question..The 2g doesn't warm up as quickly as the 1g?

The 1g warms up really quick..Really quick, so It could just be normal..You might be freaking over nothing, but I would definatly make sure the thermostat is opening when operating temp..
 
Ah ok, i didnt know that 1g's warmed up quickly...

Just didnt make sense for it to be warmed up in 2-3 minutes... the 2g def takes its time warming up..

But still, it seems to want to overheat while driving.. ill replace the thermostat and see if it changes.. maybe add some water wetter while im at it..

Does it go above operating temperature? Or does it just fluctuate? My coolant temp sensor is ###### bad too because of the CEL, even thought I recently replaced it. Get one of those & a new thermostat. Try Napa or somewhere reputable.
 
I drove home for lunch (live about 2 min away) and it almost went to red, so i shut off the car and limped it home..

Popped the hood and water was boiling in the overflow bottle, and the upper hose was hot..

Yea once it reached close to red it would fluctuate down, the thermostat must have finally decided to open...

+1 On the grab two thermostats.....I just went through 3 before I found a good one!

Damn, hope i dont have to do that :(...
