AWD swap cost??

This site may earn a commission from merchant affiliate links, including eBay, Amazon, and others.

It depends. You generally want to look for a cheap shell that has all the needed parts.

Those include
Starter Plate
<s>Starter</s>
Transmission
Transfer Case
Drive Shaft
Carrier Bearings
Exhaust
Exhaust Hangers
Axles
Rear Diff
Rear Subframe
Gas Tank
Gas Tank straps.

If your going to buy all the parts new or from junkyard/private parties individually, it would probably be upwards of 3-4000

Are you going to be doing the work yourself? The cheapest route is usually to pick up a wrecked awd roller, or just a good shell and swap everything over. If you are doing all the work your self i'd say that 800-1000 on the low side for everything, 1500-200 on the high side. IF you are paying someone to do it for you i'd expect to pay anywhere from 1000-3000 for labor depending on where you take it.

Yeah you are probably going to spend 3-5k total with parts and labor if you have to pay someone to do it.

yea about 4k about the same value as a GSX would be if you took it to a shop. But if you do attempt the swap its fun to learn new things thats what i do/did i tear stuff down and put it back together for fun so doing it your self realy isnt super hard to do just takes time. Oh and blood you will cut yourself some how on it dsms like blood

Cross off starter, they are the same on FWD and AWD, the diff is between manual and auto. It is the mounting holes that are located differently.

Yeah if your looking at having it done by someone else, its basically not feasible unless you get the parts car for free, and its a rusted out shell, or doing a spyder awd.

Otherwise its just cheaper/more sensible to be on the lookout for an AWD to drop your engine into. Your looking at a minimum of about 2500 based on 60 man/hours and a minimum shop fee of 40$/ hour. Plus some shops will charge to store a vehicle per day. And they will generally mark up supplies like gear oil and welding supplies a good bit. PLUS the cost of the parts which will probably be around 1500$ or so if you get a good roller. You might get ~500$ back for misc interior and exterior parts from that shell.

WEll, from some one on probably one of the tightest budgets on this board i'm smack dab into starting my conversion (started today officially, proceeds through the week)

I met a guy that buys and parts DSM's a while back (father owns a tow business so he seems to buy a lot of light damage cars that were totaled due to labor hours for repair) Although most things i've seen when searching range from 300 for a shell with driveline (mostly older 1g's) to about 1200 for a nice 2g shell with driveline. I've found the swap parts all available to me for between 600 and 800 bucks on average and that's with some one pulling them out and having them ready.. buying a wrecked shell is cheaper by far IMO

I am trading a rebuild t3/t4 60-1 turbo, cast turbonetics manifold with cermaic coating, a tial 38mm wastegate (these are all my old turbo setup or things i picked up extra on trades in past) But i'm giving him those, the old DP since i don't need it and the aluminum 3" cold air intake since it don't fit my 4" new compressor housing (with autostore filter) most of this cost me time/labor and some money.

I'd say i've got 600 for a fair value in the turbo/mani/gate alone since some one on here just sold there's same setup for 625.

I got an entire car with no front radiator support, although getting a good trans out of the deal which was the make or break on this deal was a little iffy it finally came through, but i found an AWD shell with built auto locally and it's CLEAN for 600 with all driveline. Seen many others get 2g's for 1k flat with good parts

There's even swaps for sale inm the classifieds for anywhere from 400 to 600 bucks on 2g parts (+shipping)

Being that i can weld and cut metal and install parts (most of the swap is super easy, had i known just how easy porbably would have done it years ago)

With the parts i do have to buy (and am not getting in the donor car)
front axles (found 30 each used)
AWD flywheel (imagine 50 or less used)
a few bolts needed (5 bucks or less)

I really will have under 200 in cash (credit card) outlay, and the rest came from my tendency to hoard, rebuild and collect good parts that at this time i can spare for "free" or make 600 bucks or more (depends on what i wanted and i want AWD)

EVen the welding is so simple anyone with a 90 dollar harbor freight MIG welder could tackle it (or have a friend or his dad tackle it = free)

The rest is so simple if you can maintane your car you can pull an AWD swap out of your ass too :D

I run a small business doing motorcycle/car customizatrion and custom fab work and so far i'd say if i charged labor to do this for some one (providing they bring me both cars and haul off the trash) i'd say 1500 bucks is a fair price
