Whats up, I'm no noob when it comes to DSM's.. I have a 1g tsi 350hp and i did everything myself. But I am a N/A noob.

I found a good deal and was just wondering what you guys have seen milage wise come out of the N/A 4g63 6 bolts. I found this car as a potential work car/ beater. Its lowered with fairly new suspension, wheels, and supposbly was well maintained. However it has 184,000 miles and I'm sure its the original motor. Have you guys seen people getting 200,000+ miles out of N/A's?
Let me know because I'm thinking I want to chance it but wanted a few last thoughts.

BTW the car starts right up, idles great, and i didnt see ANY leaks!
 
My 1993 gs had the original engine and she was sitting at a little over 300,000. How well you take care of the car and what products you use will help out allot. My 1994 talon that I have right now has 145,000 on the stock 7-bolt and the stock turbo. The hotside isn't cracked but it sure does look bad on the inside of the hotside thow. Not one bit of shaft play as well.

My 1994 did sit for 7 years. I put a battery in her and drove her over 4 hours to get back home. Not a single problem except the front caliper locking up. I have changed and flushed every fluid in it now and shes still running with no signs of stopping. I'm gonna be doing a timing belt replacement before snow falls. I'm sure my timing belt is dried out and brittle but still holding for the time being.
 
Girlfriend's '92 Talon non-turbo currently has 192k and counting.

I bought it three years ago with a broken timing belt and crashed valves for $200; I rebuilt the low end while the head was off at 172k but it honestly didn't need rebuilt....just a new head. The bearings and rings had plenty of life left.
 
Most of the 2.0 n/t I see in the junkyard have about 120k on them with a busted T-belt. I would say as long as it is maintained it should give a nice long life.
 
It all dpeneds on how the car was taken care of. Pop off the oil cap and see if the inside of the head is all bronze'd/ discolored and do a compression test. That's about all I can think to do to check an engine.
 
They can last forever really I have a neighbor with a ford expedition with 300k on it... If THAT can live why not you with good maintenance.
 
From the point you buy it, it is more up to you how long it lasts. That well depend on how you drive it and how you keep up with the maintenance/ fix problems that arise quickly.
 
Non-turbo i4 engines are abuse takers. You can beat them all day every day and they will last you a million miles. Maintenance!
 
I've seen 272,xxx on a turbo 1g. And Around 300,xxx on a N/A. The N/A is nearly identical. It just has less bits to go wrong, and is not put through as much stress.
 
i want one as a beater just havent found any good ones around my area

i believe Turbo dsm's are beaters:rolleyes:... my buddy had 3 5spd nt 4g63 talon's, SO SLOW it was embarrassing. every person that knew dsm's would ask, "that thing turbo?" i believe that 1g's awd/fwd turbo's are realitevly cheap enough to be "beaters" :hellyeah:

I keep hearing that the stock turbos on the DSM's are in diar need of rebuild at arround the 100k mile mark. I CALL BS on that! My turbo has zero haft play at all and dont burn oil even at WOT and she has 149,371 miles on her. I will be removing it and posting pics when I do. The hotside is gonna be crappy looking on the inside for shure. But its not stopping it from building boost and she don't leak a single drop of anything to be burnt.
