I just received the sending unit for my autometer oil pressure gauge and it has 1/8" npt threading. How has this been utilized on our cars...?

Yes, but if you make the exchange fast enough you'll hardly lose any because there isn't a ton of oil at the filter housing without the system pressurized. You'll get a little dirty, but that's about it.

Do not mount the sender directly to the oil filter housing. Engine vibration will cause the transducer to go bad, many people using the autometer pressure sender have problems with this.

The solution is to mount the sender to the crossmeber next to the oil filter housing and run a hose from the sender to the oil filter housing.
