auto trans diag help!

Hey guys, not sure if this should go into the newbie section or not because im kind of a putz when it comes to transmissions. If it needs to be moved than feel free mods. Thanks.
Heres my problem. I have a 95 Eagle Talon auto awd. mod list is current. I just got her running the other day after almost a year of replacing that then this breaks and so on and so forth. Well im driving down the road for the first time in my new talon and it shifts somewhat ok into 1st and 2nd then she will just slip into neutral and rev. If you pop it into neutral and back into drive it will move a little bit more before going back into neutral on her own. Thats the symptoms. Now the rundown on the car.
I know its a 2g but I bought it and it appears to have a 1g 7 bolt block. Now i dont know if they did anything to the transmission or not or if that got swapped out for something else but when i went to mitsu to buy a dipstick they ordered me a dipstick for a 95 eclipse gsx (same thing i thought) but I only put in like 4 quarts of fluid after doing a filter change (and almost getting atleast double that out of the bell housing) and the stick reads over full at o.t.
Do I have a blown tranny? Any ideas or stuff to check out would be awesome! Thanks in adavance!

First things first.

Drain some of the tranny fluid and refill to the proper level.

Having to much tranny fluid is a bad thing. It causes foaming inside the transmission.

About it going into neutral, If i'm not mistaken that could be a bad band in the transmission.

Or possibly the shift lever needs adjusting.

Like stated above, first off check to make sure your fluid level is good.

Now I'm not an expert on the DSM trannies, but assuming it's similiar to a 4t60E GM transmission I'm going to go with your forward band needs replaced.

1. how do i refill with the proper amount of fluid when i dont know if the dipstick is even the correct one
and 2. what am i supposed to put in? 2 quarts? that wouldnt be enough to fill the pan...
fluid doesnt look burned. its still bright red so clutches are still good i would assume. and theres no sign of foaming on the stick

As far as how much to fill it, this is going to sound stupid, but fill it until it's full. You will start the car, let it run, check the dipstick. Full, needs filled, or dead on? If it's on the dipstick but not quite to the full mark, start adding fluid half a quart at a time. If I remember right, the auto tranny takes like 9 quarts total, but assuming yours has fluid (wouldn't drive if it didn't) you should only need a few quarts if that.

and before you ask i used the specified fluid. atf +4. according to the year and model anyways...

that is absolutely my biggest part of the problem though. im not sure if my transmission is original or not. (the car was a mess when i picked it up.) it did not have a trans dipstick so i ordered one. what came in is what i put in but when the car is running and at operating temperature and after having gone through the gears to circulate fluid, it reads way over full! but i only put in like i said 4 quarts after dropping the pan to replace the filter. that should have brought it close but no where near where it says the level is. right? maybe it has a 1g transmission as well? i have no idea

You need to check it in Neutral. Not park.

something else that might help is the dip stick has a white plastick end with the markings "cold" and "hot" on it. From memory its only about a foot and a half long, maybe shorter. If a 1g is shorter and may be able to give me an accurate reading than let me know.

just so i can confirm does anyone have a picture of a 1g dipstick or even better a picture of both? or does anyone know if they are the same?

got the fluid level adjusted correctly and test drove it again. shifts up fine but as soon as i let off the throttle and it has to shift down it goes into neutral. any other blatantly odvious things im missing? shift cable adjustment possibly?

If the level is fine, and its doing that you need to check for codes.
