i just noticed today that I can shift from P to anything by pushing the button on the shift knob without having the brake down

at first i thought this wont be a problem, but then i did it without the key in the ignition and im getting really nervous now....is my tranny going shot?

Check under the center console where the shifter is, there is a pin toward the front of the assembly that moves in and out of the white piece that turns when you push the button down, that pin moves in and out to lock the shifter when not engaging the brake. check if it is not stuck out of the white plastic therefore allowing you to select gears with out engaging the brakes

hope it doesnt sound to confusing

heres a pic of what im talking about

check your brake lock cable. I have both of mine out, there about $20 at the dealer. You have two cables like that, the brake and a key lock cable for the autos. easy to find.
