Auto swap rear end and axle compatibility

Im in the process of swapping a 1g from a 5 spd to an auto. The rear end in the car is a 4 bolt and my roommate bought a 3 bolt rear from an auto car.

My question is can i just use the 3 bolt diff with the 4 bolt axles?

If not can i take the gears out of the 3 bolt and put them in the 4 bolt housing with the 4 bolt differential?

The axles are not interchangable. You can however swap over the auto 3-bolt ring and pinion over to the 4-bolt rear diff.

Thats what i had gathered from the research i have done but all the threads i saw were quite a few years old so i wanted to verify.
